BO with QTR

BO with QTR

2005-07-30 by Tony Bonanno

Hi Group,

I've searched the archives and somehow have missed it, but HOW do you
print BO (black only) using QTR ?? Do you make a custom curve ?
Print using "none" for the curves selection ?? Thanks and sorry if
this has been hashed over repeatedly, but I did try to find it.

Yes, you could make a custom curve that only used black and gray ink. If you
only want to use the full black ink, and not the gray, then I don't see the
point of using QTR, since the Epson driver does that just fine.

Why would you want to use QTR if you're printing BO?

I can think of a few reasons. YOu can control ink laydown and limit it if necessary. More
importantly, you can linearize it, and profile it and preview it.

I thought I had read a few posts where there was reference to BO with
QTR and I was wondering how that was done. The only reason I'd want
to try it with QTR is to see if I could get a BO print without the
microbanding that I often get with BO and the Epson driver. I've done
a fair amount of experimenting with QTR comparing it to BO and there
are times where I really love the BO look, without the need for lots
of curve/ink settings experimentation for each paper. I don't like
the dither pattern/microbanding though that often accompanies BO. I
actually use QTR for most of my BW printing, but when I saw some posts
referencing BO/QTR, I thought that it would be worth a look.

With QTR, if you make your own curves, it is indeed possible to restrict
them to use only a subset of the available inks.

Re: BO with QTR & a note about MANUAL head alignment

2005-07-31 by Tony Bonanno

Thanks Paul, Tyler, and others for the information. I think I'd like
to experiment a little with BO and QTR. I think I've solved my
microbanding problems with BO and the Epson driver this morning. Was
a no-brainer. I had been using the AUTO head alignment routine on the
4000, which didn't seem to help. Tried the MANUAL alignment which is
not decribed in the written user guide, but is described in detail on
the CD software reference manual. The Manual head alignment really
helped. :-)

Cheers,

Tony

For 2100, the Epson driver don't have "black only" only the 2200 have it

I think that's the reason he is asking.

Re: BO with QTR

Hi Tony,

I have an Epson 2200, that I have been using with the Ultrachrome
inkset, and I believe the 2100 is the same machine only that it's
used in the UK or Europe? Anyway, from what I understand, if
you're using the Ultrachrome inkset, or an equivalent one, the
warm profiles in QTR, generally only use the black & light black
inks. Personally, this option is a little too warm for me, and
therefore I tend to blend it to some degree with the cool profile.
But, if printing with only the black inks with QTR is what you're
after, and you're using a paper/ink combination that is already
profiled, then using one of the warm profiles might be the option
you're after. Just check the ink descriptor file to see if it uses
any of the other inks. If it does you could pretty easily modify the
profile and create one suited to your liking, that only used the black
inks.

Otherwise, while I haven't printed strictly black only (in the sense
of using only one ink) on my 2200, I also have an Epson 1280 with
the the Piezotone inkset that I have used to produce postcards and
greeting cards using a BO workflow in order to save on ink costs.
The results are actually rather beautiful in their own right. And,
I've done so by using QTR to print BO using only the Piezotone
Portfolio Black by creating my own custom curve. I'm sure you
could do the same with the 2100, if you really wanted to.

Hope that helps,

Eric

Re: BO with QTR

2005-08-05 by Tony Bonanno

Thanks Eric and everyone for the helpful information about a custom
curve using largely just the black inks. I've had a few very
informative emails from this group also. Great bunch here. I'm not
sure how much further I'll pursue the "black" only look with QTR.
I've done some experimenting and now have some QTR curves that look
pretty close to the BO look with certain papers. Maybe leave it at
that for now. Unfortunately, I've not had much time to do my "own"
printing lately, but hopefully that will change soon and I can free up
some time.

Cheers,

Tony

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
