QTR "really" slow spooling/processing prints

QTR "really" slow spooling/processing prints

2008-04-06 by Tim Atherton

I'm not sure if this was due to changes in printers or in versions of
QTR, but when I used an Epson 2200, this was never a problem.

Then I found that with an Epson 2400, QTR was taking forever to
process and/or (I'm not exactly clear on what the actual process is
it goes through...) spool prints

Doesn't matter if they are 8x10 or 13x19 - the former just don't take
quite so long. But for a 13x19, I'm talking 30+ minutes

I recently got a 3800 and thought maybe it was just the interface
with the 2400, but no - I get the same.

I've tried various different connections - Firewire, USB, Network -
same for each. I've also fiddled with all sorts of different Windows
settings, but none made a difference.

This is compared with using the Epson driver that for the same print
takes maybe 4-5 minutes at most

All on the same (somewhat old, but still fairly fast) Windows 2000
machine

Any ideas or suggestions (as I really like QTR...)

thanks

I use a 2200 on a Win2000 machine and periodically have the same kind of
problem. Sometimes it will print fine, other times it will get part way
through a job and then slow down, way down, so that it makes a pass over
the paper only every second or couple of seconds. It then takes a long
time to finish the print. I have 512MB of memory and lots of disk space. I
guess one way to look at it is that it gives the ink a long time to dry.

I've no idea if this will be of any help to you but I had something
similar happen the other day with a Win XP system. Overnight it
started spooling incredibly slowly and eventually ended up by giving
communication errors after partial prints. I tried new cables,
uninstalling the printer and driver and reinstalling, different
printers and even removing and reinstalling QTR itself. Nothing
helped. I finally tried printing to a file via QTR and then using the
command line to copy the file directly to the printer while bypassing
the print spooler entirely. That worked. So I think something in the
spooler itself has gone awry. At the moment I'm printing from QTR
directly to the printer without spooling until I can determine exactly
what to do to fix the problem. That totally ties up the computer so is
a bit inconvenient but getting the prints out is the end game.

One thing I also noticed is that small files seemed to print alright
sometimes. Another is that I dared not use the fit to paper option in
QTR or give it an unusual dpi file or anything other than 100% in the
spin box or it would crash rapidly.

Regards
Duane

Hi Tim,

I'm far from being much of a Windows expert -- especially W 2000.
But there haven't been any significant changes to how QTR works on Windows
for a very long time so I don't know why it should be different.

There are the usual suspects -- disk fragmentation and very large files.
Also since my main machine is a Mac I only use my Windows XP occasionally but
periodically it gets super slow and if I look at Task Manager it's the
virus checker
doing who knows what -- it uses 100% of cpu for an hour.
I'd check the Task Manager and see what processes are using the CPU and
how much disk I/O is being done.
