Help w/ B&W printing

Help w/ B&W printing

2008-04-17 by Steven Burt

Hello,

It seems that I do not know what I am doing when it comes to printing in B&W, maybe even color, but anyway - I have an Epson R1800 printer, that is connected to a iMac with version 10.5. What I see is not what I get. Not sure which profile I should be using and how to configure my printer to get the best prints that I can. Please let me know your steps for the best print images, if there is such a thing.

Thanks again,

Steven

Hello Steven, the 1800, although a great color printer both matte and glossy doesn't print
b&w very well out of the box. It uses only one black ink at a time and fills in all of the rest
of the grayscale with colored inks and that makes it hard to get all of the color cast out of
the midtones and highlights. If you visit:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/

and

http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800.htm

You can find info on setting up an 1800 to print very good b&w and color but on MATTE
PAPER ONLY. If you are so inclined it may be worth a try. If you want to keep the glossy
capability of the 1800 color you could pick up a cheap 8.5x11 printer from epson and set
that one up for black and white.

You might also visit:

http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

There is a lot of information on printing techniques called BO (Black Only) using various
Epson printers, however I don't know how the 1800 does in that respect.

Other than BO techniques, you generally need multiple black inks such as the 3MK
technique of Paul Roark on the 1800, or multiple shades of gray and a RIP such as QTR to
get acceptable b&w.

Good luck!

Steven
The Epson R1800 is an incredible printer, but as a tool it must be
used in the most appropriate way. As a color GLOSSY printer, I used
the Eson Vivid printer setting and it always produced incredible
color glossy prints. This was before I bought a system to calibrate
my monitor and printer. So if you shoot digital and use Adobe RGB as
a color space you should be able to create stunning color prints. I
switched my printer to a black-only printer for MATT paper using 3
channels of MIS Eboni matt black carbon ink, QuadTone Rip (thanks Roy
Harrington) and the 3MK profile (thanks Paul Roark). The 1800 has
the smallest 1.5 picoliter droplet and really makes black-only
printing a viable option for many types of work. IF you give us more
info when can assist better.
Good luck.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Help w/ B&W printing

2008-04-21 by Ken Carney

Sheila,

I am a brand-new member of the list, and thought I would give QTR a try. I
have two printers, a 2200 with ImagePrint 6 and an R1800 with various paper
profiles for color. I have tried two gloss papers with the 1800. One is
the Harman FB, and the other is the Epson Exhibition FB. For those, I used
the only QTRprofile I could find, for Ilford F Pearl, and made a Photoshop
adjustment curve to compensate for the (calibrated) monitor to print
difference. Then, I printed the same print on the 2200 with the IP
profiles, and found they matched the QTR prints very well (except for the
gloss differential missing on the 2200). Now, it appears I need to
investigate what hardware and software is necessary to make proper profiles
for QTR! There is no end to this.

Ken

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Help w/ B&W printing

Ken,

I have not found a good way to print glossy BW. I haven't made any of
my own profiles, but I have tried the profiles recommended here.
However, I get bronzing on glossy paper. The matte papers come out
really nice. What I am looking for is a good glossy paper for the R800
that I can print color on. Actually, I'd like to be able to get glossy
card stock for that, but I've been told there isn't any that will work
with that printer.

I'll check out the ones you mentioned, and see if they come in card
stock sizes.

Thanks,
Sheila
