QuadToneRIP Seems to Interfere with Epson Printer

QuadToneRIP Seems to Interfere with Epson Printer

2008-10-01 by cath9862004

I have an Epson 2200 I have used for years. It is important for me to be able to select the
Premium Semigloss Paper under Print Settings. After installing QuadToneRIP (I get a
Quad2200 choice in the print box) I no longer have all of the paper choices I had before,
including the Premium Semigloss. I have tried reinstalling the Epson 2200 driver from the
install disk and also as a download from the website and it did not fix the problem. Please
help. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Here are my computer specs:

Mac PPC G5 / 2.5GHz Quad / 2GB RAM
OS 10.4.11
Quad2200 = version 4.3
Stylus Photo 2200 = version 4.3

Thanks a lot - Catherine.

Which black ink do you have installed in your printer? With the PC version
of the Epson driver, if you have the matte black ink installed, then only
matte paper options are offered by the driver and thus the Premium Semigloss
would not be available.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried changing the cartridges from matte to black and I still did not get the options.

Tom,

I forgot to ask: Is there anything I have to do when I change the inks to confirm that the printer has registered the change of inks?

Thanks,

Catherine

I can only speak to the PC environment. I do not have to do anything other
than change the black cart. You can see what the Epson driver considers to
be installed by using the Epson Status Monitor (or whatever the Mac
equivalent is). I have never experienced QTR affecting the operation of the
Epson driver on my PC.

Good luck

Hi Catherine,

When you install the Epson driver for the 2200 it becomes fixed to the type of
black ink you have in at the time. So if you install when there's MK ink you
won't see any papers that take PK ink -- even if you change the ink back to PK.

There are two approaches to dealing with this. 1) whenever you change the
black ink cart to the opposite type of black you must delete and re-install the
Epson driver. 2) if you do this more often is to create two epson
driver installations
with different names. With MK ink installed, create a printer named
"Epson 2200 MK"
and with PK installed create a printer named "Epson 2200 PK". Then you can
always print to the appropriate printer.

(BTW, this has nothing to do with the QTR driver. They can co-exist just fine.
QTR just uses whatever ink is installed in the printer. It does not
care which one.)

I think this is true only on the Mac. On my PC I have never had to
re-install the Epson driver when changing black inks. It usually
recognizes the ink change, sometimes I have to do a status check or exit
the printing function and re-enter it, but it never requires deleting and
re-installing the driver.

Whoa, wait a minute. Re-installing the Epson driver isn't necessary
with a PC. Simply swap the carts and power cycle the printer. You may
need to reboot the PC as well but that's all it takes to see the
proper media options.

I'm not sure how QTR reads the ink cart, but it seems if it doesn't
read the printer directly it must be looking at some internal setting
that the Epson driver sets.

Anyway swaping MK/PK or PK/MK carts on the 2200 doesn't require a
driver re-install.

Catherine's got a Mac so that is what I was referring to. I'm not sure about
all the PC issues. I'd be surprised if you needed to reboot computer but
I don't know. I think you can go into the Printer Maintenance tab and
select the other ink.

QTR does none of the above -- it just prints -- you get whatever ink comes out
of the jets.

On the Mac that's what Epson did.
