R1800 use

R1800 use

2008-12-23 by Myron Gochnauer

I'm using an Epson R1800 with QTR and the 3-MK setup.

I am experimenting with using this carbon-black-only printing on
Ilford Gold Fibre Silk paper. While the 3-MK setup uses only MIS Ebony
ink, which is a "matt black ink" and hence not recommended for the
paper, I rather like the results, and think that lovely, if somewhat
delicate, prints can be made this (with suitable coating).

The problem: the Ilford paper is so stiff, and the surface so
delicate, that it will not reliably feed through the "tray" feeder,
and I have *never* been able to get the single-sheet feeder at the
back of the printer to work properly.

The single-sheet (manual) feeder makes all the requisite noises, and
at least some rollers move in various ways, but the paper is not
touched. I have tried all kinds of repositioning, and nothing helps.
It might work properly one out of twenty or thirty times.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have never had similar problems
with a 2200 or a 4880.

Thanks.

Myron

Sorry, long day and hit the wrong button.

I just tried some Gold Fibre Silk with an 1800 and it fed perfectly through the tray feeder. I
sent the first one through with a slight push and then tried it even without the push and it
was fine. I'm seeing a lot of post about 1800 feed issues and wonder if there is something
that can go out of adjustment or there is a very wide latitude in printers out of the factory.

Hi Myron,

>>The single-sheet (manual) feeder makes all the requisite noises, and
at least some rollers move in various ways, but the paper is not
touched. I have tried all kinds of repositioning, and nothing helps.
It might work properly one out of twenty or thirty times.
To get the 1800 to load the single sheet feeder properly you have to push
the paper all the way in until it stops.
You have to preload the paper before printing.
Follow the Epson instructions carefully and it loads fine every time.

However even when you have done this and the paper loads correctly,
I am not convinced QTR can print on the paper loaded through the single
sheet feeder.
I can't get it to print properly on the 1900 and have had an email exchange
with Ray about this and tried a few fixes from him.
But no success so far.

But we would like to know if you can get it to work on 1800 or not. Please
try again.

Txs,

Mike

Myron,

There is a big rotating rubber feeder roller that loads the paper from the
multi-sheet feeder.
This gets clogged with paper coating and then can't grip the paper properly
so it damages the paper surface as it loads.
I've seen this with papers like Epson Ultrasmooth (which should be feed
through manual feed, but that doesn't work with QTR).

I have used some cleaning sheets to remove this junk off my 1900 roller.
I use Epson A4 cleaning sheets. I think you can buy similar things, probably
cheaper, from Staples in the US.

You just have to be careful feeding the sticky paper as its very thin and
there is a danger it misfeeds as it comes out of the printer and folds up
inside the printer. Easy to remove, but head can get jammed against it.
But it does the job and you can see all the junk on the sticky paper after
use.

Happy printing.
