On my 1800, the single-sheet feeder has never worked unassisted. I need to feed the paper in until it engages the rollers, then hold it with a slight downward pressure until the printer pulls it in. It has been this way since I bought it.

  ...
The problem: the Ilford paper is so stiff, and the surface so
delicate, that it will not reliably feed through the "tray" feeder,
and I have *never* been able to get the single-sheet feeder at the
back of the printer to work properly.

The single-sheet (manual) feeder makes all the requisite noises, and
at least some rollers move in various ways, but the paper is not
touched. I have tried all kinds of repositioning, and nothing helps.
It might work properly one out of twenty or thirty times.

Can you confirm that QTR prints correctly on the paper once you get the
single sheet to feed?
That's using the QTR "Manual Roll (Rear)" option on PC.

Mike

I just used the "QuadR100-3MK" Mac driver to print using "Manual Roll
(Rear)".

The top error light (that pictures a sheet of paper plus a trash
container) remained flashing longer than I expected, but the printer
was slowly checking out the paper. The light stopped flashing when the
paper finally fed into printing position.

It worked, so the Mac version of QTR can access the manual feed on an
R1800.

Myron,

Sorry to be pedantic, but can you confirm that you actually printed
something with QTR onto the paper, ideally within the first inch of paper.

Yes, I printed something. The image printed with the normal 1/4"
margin at the leading edge. The quality was uniform across the page.

QTR worked only if the paper was not loaded until QTR started printing
and the printer looked for paper. The paper error light goes on, I put
the paper all the way into the manual feed slot (going around the
bottom corner to the firm stop), press the flashing button, and off it
goes.

If I preload the paper (as the Epson manual says), QTR will not print.
I have to wait until QTR is actually waiting for the paper to be loaded.

If I get things messed up I have to turn off the printer and start over.

Yes, QTR (2.6.1) prints correctly, with the expected margins as I set them. So for that matter does the Epson driver.

Encouraged by your experiences on the 1800 I went back and tried the 1900
single sheet feed again.
Neither 2.6.1.0 or 2.6.2.0 work either pre or post loading the paper. They
print into fresh air for the first inch or so.

However one of Roy's test versions he had sent me does work with pre or post
loading.
Must have somehow missed that the other evening during testing; probably the
grape juice effect.

Note that I do find that the single sheet paper feed is very very sensitive.
You have to load the paper all the way into the hard stop and then the
printer should suck it in a bit further BEFORE it does the major paper feed.
If it doesn't suck it in a bit first, then you will probably get a misfeed
on print and have to cancel the job in the printer queue and hold the
dustbin button down on the printer for ever before it resets.

Happy printing.

I can confirm Makes 1900 QTR behavior here. Manual rear feed, when it
does work, situates the paper incorrectly before starting to print
from QTR, pre or post loading. The Epson driver works fine.

Hi -

Poor paper feeding thru a R-1800---- I clean the large rubber roller using alcohol on a clean cotton rag. Hold the rag against the roller and push the paper feed button. Do this several times with the alcohol then use a dry rag and do the same thing. This always helps the loading process.
