Trouble with QuadTone RIP dialog box

Trouble with QuadTone RIP dialog box

2009-02-03 by Randy Rancier

I am using a Mac and version 2.6.2 OTR, Photoshop CS3.

Everything was running perfect, then I quit getting a choice to select the QuadTone RIP
Dialog box when the print driver was up. It was working well before until I modified a curve
file I was working on and then installed it. That is when all of my problems started. I wasn't
having any problems creating curve files and installing them before this point. I tried
restarting; I ended up deleting the two folders of QTR and reinstalled and set the printer back
up, and reinstalled my curves that I have been working on.

Now when I get to the QuadTone RIP dialog box and I try to select a curve there is no curves
to select from; "None" is the only choice. Not sure why it isn't finding the curves; I'm not sure
how to tell it where to look for the curve data.

I was really making some headway, and on my final rounds of tweaking my curves to get the
maximum dmax before linearization. This is getting very frustrating.

Thanks,
Randy

Re: Trouble with QuadTone RIP dialog box PROBLEM RESOLVED!

2009-02-03 by Randy Rancier

I believe I solved my own problem by some trouble shooting. I'm going to leave this
message posted in case someone else has, has had or will have this same problem.

To make a long story short, I determined that when you install you curve files, the name
you give them can't be too long or it will screw up your whole QTR printing system or
workflow up. SOLUTION: if you ever run into this problem is to shorten the offending file
name, delete the offending xxx.quad file, and then simply reinstall your profiles by double
clicking on the Installxxx.command file your profile/curve folder with your txt files. After
this your QTR drivers will work properly again.

Randy,

Maybe you can help me since you are figuring out some of your own problems. It seems like
you are farther along to understanding QTR than I am. I have the same setup; CS3 and QTR
2.6.2 with Mac ver. 10.5.6.

In the print dialog box, I don't even get Quadtone RIP as a choice. It is available in Lightroom
and the application 'Preview' but not in CS3. I don't see it at all.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks,
David

Re: Trouble with QuadTone RIP dialog box PROBLEM RESOLVED!

2009-02-03 by Randy Rancier

David, Roy inquired about my problem, and this was my reply to him:

Here is the name of the file I was using when the problem started:
 QTR_1400_UT14_EDSM_cool_1_BstK50_ovrlp5_RR.txt

I believe it is the length of the file name that is important, I don't believe it is compatible
with CS3 or perhaps the Mac (ver. 10.4.11) print dialog. I shortened the name too:
UT14_EDSM_cool_1_BstK50_ovrlp5_RR.txt and it worked. I didn't change any of the
contents in the file, I just simply changed the name of the file.

The problem started as soon as I installed the curve with the longer file name; not only did
screw up the function of that profile but the whole Ouad1400-UT14 driver. After clicking
on the "Print" in the CS3 dialog box with the QTR driver "Quad1400-UT14" selected, when
the next "Printer" dialog box came up and you go to the third selection box from the top
and try to select "QuadTone RIP", it wasn't there as a choice. To fix the problem I went in
and deleted all of the "xxx.quad" files in my "Quad1400-UT14" Profile folder, shortened
the name a bit in the folder with the curve txt files and reinstalled using the install
command.

I am currently using a file name: QTR_1400_UT14_EDSM_cool_1_BoostK50_RR.txt So the
critical length is somewhere between the number of characters in the first file name
mentioned above and this one.

Hope this helps,
Randy

I just got a response back from Roy, and this was his reply to me, I don't think he will mind
me sharing it with you all:

"Thanks, Randy. I checked it out and there is a limit of 40 chars in the OS
for names in the printer description file -- goes back to an Adobe
definition from long ago.
I'll have to check this and give an error in the future.

I guess you get a prize for the longest name!"

Yes, it is an intel Mac. I'm connecting to my Epson 1400 with a USB cable.

If I try to print from Lightroom or Preview, everything seems to be there. In the Print dialog box there is a drop down
feature where my choices are:

Layout
Paper Handling
Cover Page
Scheduler

Quadtone RIP
Printer Features

Summary

When I choose Quadtone RIP, I have access to the curves features.

However, in CS3, I am not able to choose Quadtone RIP. So then, I can't access the curves.

David,

The issue that Randy found was a OSX enforced limit of 40 chars in a curve name.
You'd have to be creating your own curves and use a very long name.

If this is the problem just shorten the name and you'll be fine.
If this isn't the issue, send me info about whatever special things
you are doing if any.
Run the DiagnosticScript that you will find at
/Applications/QuadToneRIP/DiagnosticScript.command
Cut and paste all the text output and email that to me.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
