start up questions

2009-07-08 by mberman89

I am trying to figure out how to get QTR going. And am under a bit of stress and deadline to get some prints finished ... so I will probably have a few questions. I am quite a few days into bringing the system on line.

Right now I am setting up a 7600 with Cones K7 .. and in a month I will bring a 9800 with similar inks on line. I am using a mac pro with osx 10.5.7 and photoshop CS4.

I did all the set up work in the epson driver ... and part of what I spent a great deal of time doing was figuring out the ethernet. My office is very small ... so if at all possible I would like to use ethernet to get to my printers in the next room. When I tried to use QTR I found no Ethernet option. And have since noted it is set up for USB. Is it possible to use ethernet??

Also I noted - "Attention to Mac users of Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.1 under OSX 10.5 Leopard There are color management problems with B&W printing with both Epson ABW and QTR" I am using cs4 with osx 10.5 ... is this still possible ... what kind of color management problems are we looking at. I updated everything for this project. My old mac died and my old photoshop was the first CS.

I will probably have quite a few questions in the next week, but these feel like foundational ones ... I appreciate any help and advice.

thanks michael berman

You can use an small Print Server atached to your printer with the
Ethernet cable:

Hello Michael, QTR can only be used as a USB printer, no firewire or ethernet. I'm still on CS3 so can't answer the CS4/10.5 question although it seems to be well documented and with solutions. Have you searched or asked here:

Re: start up questions / ethernet use / wireless

2009-07-08 by mberman89

I worked into the wee hours after I sent this last night. And found when I ran a script for QTR in profiles it gave me the option of using an IP address at the very end ... and it seems to have worked. I went to bed after this small success ... 20 hours was enough. If this turns out to have problems I will let folks know.

Thanks jose ... I have wondered about wire less ... but my old man's 20th century brain still wants to see cables . Does anyone know about how wireless and ethernet might compare? I will print up to 700 mb files.

Also I have just about drained my piggy bank to do this ... and I am trying to make what I have work ... what I have is very very good ... if it will all play nice together.

thanks

michael

I use my MacPro for print to an Epson 7800 at 10 meters with the
Airport Express atached. It's 802.11n, a fast Wi-Fi. But if I would
have the printer near me, I wouldprefer the infallible Ethernet...

Jose,
Either wireless or hard wire will work fine.. Printing does not require anywhere near the speed that other things do. I use a combination of both here.. My studio is about 75 feet from my house.. so I'm wireless from the house to the studio.. Both the house and the studio use wired system also.. Most of my printers are wired to the network but I have 2 printers set up using a bridge..( that less costly then buying Epson network server cards) so everything goes to them wireless. I just read what I wrote ,,, maybe not making a lot of sense.. sorry.. Anyway design your system the way you'd like to do it.. file size is not an issue..

Re: start up questions / ethernet use / wireless

2009-07-10 by mberman89

Thanks ..

in the end I just could not get the ethernet to work. I went through this the last time I tried to get quadtone going. I found the IP in my Network preferences did not work ... and found a strange one for the printer and it worked. This time it has worm me down.

I did find the mdns:// info but could not enter it .. its all a bit confusing.

If anyone can give me simple instructions to connect ethernet for this setup would appreciate it

mac os10.5.7, cs4 epson 7600

For now I bought the longest usp I could find ... and will move on to see if I can figure out .. how to run a profile for inks and paper so I will start a new thread with questions tomorrow after I look at the site to night.

thanks michael

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: start up questions

2009-07-12 by Roy Harrington

You can use QTR on an ethernet in several ways.

If the printer or print server has a fixed IP address you can just enter the
IP number during the install script. However many setups have dynamically
set IP addresses -- i.e. they are assigned and may be different later.
There's a setup called Bonjour that can handle this automatically. Most
of the newer Epson printers do support this although you may need to
enable it on the printer front panel. If you can "see" the bonjour printer
in the OSX Print&Fax dialog it's very easy to use it for QTR. See the
last page of the Tutorial.pdf for more details on this.

Re: start up questions

I got it the mac has a pretty good setup once I figured it out, it does all if you just put in the correct IP ... and I had some basic confusion on the IP. I will write this up for a beginner to use and post it ... hopefully it will help.
