Premier Alise in Inventory at InkjetMall

Premier Alise in Inventory at InkjetMall

2009-12-28 by piezobw

I just brought in the full inventory of Premier Alise BW. This paper is the bomb. It is every inch as good as the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag in terms of dMax, smoothness, look & feel. I look for this paper to be consistent in the ways that HPR has not. Smaller company - attentive.

I have been using it in my own studio, and can vouch for compatibility with my inks. The surface is really beautiful with both Piezography K7 and PiezoTone inks. The dMax is every bit as deep as HPR (when HPR is at its best and not bleeding.) I can't say enough how impressed I am with the Alise:

Jon:

Is the profile for this paper available somewhere? I am using 1400 K6SE.

Thanks

No the profile is not... we stripped it from the release.

I was introduced to this paper at a trade show and told that its base and coating were superior to Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, and that it would not yellow, etc... . I should have tested it but I really trusted the supplier from a long term relationship. Instead, I found that the coating yellows quickly under studio light and determined that it is not an archival sheet. I was totally surprised by this. It did turn out to be a bomb (but in another way...) I immediately made an announcement to my customers and I am sorry if I did not make that announcement here. We sold out all the Premiere papers at our cost in early 2010.

We have our own paper which we are responsible for. It is a cotton paper base and has an excellent coating for our inks. We have a company in France producing the JonCone Studio Type 2 paper for us. Small batches, consistency, and no surprises. It prints every bit as good as HPR - but without the brighteners put into the sheet. They also make the paper with a baryta coating as our Type 5. The Type 5 is considered to be the best baryta paper by those who use it and have compared it to the big paper companies.

The JonCone Studio papers are here:

Yeah, I¹m one of those who bought a boatload of Alise based on Jon¹s
original recommendation. But all is not lost; I now use it for proofing
with my K7 Neutral inks. No hard feelings, we all make honest mistakes.

Be careful then with Breathing Color Optica too, the spectral plot
resembles the Alise one. Some of the older Epson Art papers show some
relation too and were assumed to be Premier products. The OBAs are
used in the inkjet coating only and not throughout the base.

Addition: I see the two show the same shift of the paper white at
Aardenburg Imaging after 80-90 Megalux-hours.

My comments were in regards to the Photo Bright rather than the BW. We did not sell BW at InkjetMall. The testing was done on Photo Bright. Sorry if I caused any alarm on the BW paper. My understanding is that it does not have the same amount of OBA in it.

We originally were seeking a HPR replacement because HPR was having yellowing problems at the time. OBAs can be a bad thing in abundance. Most papers use a little. I'm favoring non-OBA papers these days. I never thought I would get used to them - but they're really quite lovely and I do not miss the contrast of the bright white to the black.

The ones tested at Aardenburg Imaging and failing:

Breathing Color Optica One 300 gsm Fine Art Paper
PremierArtTM Alise Bright White 200 gsm

However I made a mistake too, the following share identical spectral plots:

Breathing Color Optica One 300 gsm Fine Art Paper
Premier Generations Alise Photo 260 gsm

The Bright White has even more OBA content but all three have plenty of
OBAs and all in the paper coating only. I would avoid them. More papers
from both brands show that difference in the paper structure. As written
Epson has/had some qualities that show similarities, EEM/EAM or whatever
it is called now and Epson Watercolor Radiant White 190 gsm.
