QTR with Claria inks in 1400

QTR with Claria inks in 1400

2010-02-17 by rhozbud

I'm amazed at the neutrality that is possible with QTR using the Claria inks, but there's a problem in the curves for the EPGPP - revealed by the 21 step chart, which makes the dark grays flatten out completely. The other profile (for Harmon paper) works better but the tones are not as accurate as the overall look of the profile for the Epson prem gloss paper. Is there anyone out there who had the same problem and found a solution? I don't have a calibrator so I can't make a whole new curve. I'm hoping there is a simple way to just change the numbers in the given one. Anyone??
thanks
Rose

I once made some for the 260 that might work with your setup. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/260-Claria-QTR-Profiles.zip

I suspect re-linearizing for the 1400 would help. I don't know how close the papers are to what you're using either.

(The profiles were made for a Rangefinder Magazine workshop and their 280, but on my 260. All Claria printers are somewhat similar but not necessarily exact clones.)

Thank you Paul, I will try that - but - will it work for Epson Prem GLOSSY paper? I saw in your "readme" that "Matte paper type is always used on the QTR settings.."

You'll just have to give it a try. Often profiles for similar papers are at least within re-linearization range. I highly recommend every B&W printer learn to linearize QTR profiles.

Along that line, I tried Roy's new QTR StepWedge tool with a digital camera as opposed to a scanner, and it appeared to give the same results. So, as long as you have CS3 or 4, there are several routes to linearizing profiles. With the camera I just made sure there were no reflections off the glossy test strips, the target was within the central part of a moderate telephoto, and a small aperture was used to minimize light falloff.

If you don't have a spectro, CS3 or CS4, my more manual way to linearize is at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Making_B-W_ICCs-GrayCard.pdf

Yes, I think that is standard QTR practice.
