HP printer support in QTR?

HP printer support in QTR?

2010-03-29 by Ernst Dinkla

Roy,

There are more spin-offs of Gimpprin/Gutenprint like PhotoPrint
written by Alastair M. Robinson. Linux and Windows versions.
http://www.blackfiveimaging.co.uk/index.php?article=02Software%2F01PhotoPrint

That one supports several HP and Canon printers, in fact all the
GutenPrint supported printers.
Would it be possible to borrow some modules from that side to make
support of other brands possible?
Or a hybrid of the two printer applications. There's color management in
PhotoPrint integrated.

I'm interested in HP models because their cart content is larger and the
carts are used in a CIS concept which on the Epsons is only available
from the 3800 upwards, the Business printers B300 and B500DN not
counted. The user replaceable heads are another aspect that I learned to
appreciate on the HP printers and may suit the use of custom inksets as
well.

Hi Ernst,

I kind of keep my peripheral vision on GutenPrint stuff but don't follow all the
details. My impression is that they don't support the "interesting"
HP or Canon printers.
A quick look at hp.com and the gutenprint supported printers don't seem to
overlap much -- but I must admit I'm not up on HP or Canon printers.

Roy,

It depends. I installed PhotoPrint the Windows GUI for Gutenprint and it
drives the HP Officejet Pro K5400 with the K60 driver. There must be
more possible like that.

I think that the interesting printers can be in the Officejet and the
slightly older Designjet class. The B9180 and the Designjet Z models are
already quite good at B&W printing and I fear that the
calibration/linearisation already integrated may not work with custom
inksets so not really much to gain there. The 4-6 ink models could be
more interesting.

Have you seen some features of PhotoPrint? The ink control that exists,
GCR etc? There's a video on the site that shows some of the controls. In
no way equal to QTR but probably more tools to adapt to a custom inkset
than a normal HP driver would allow.
