Epson Exhibition Fiber ICC Profile

Epson Exhibition Fiber ICC Profile

2010-08-14 by RParker124

I have an Epson 3800 and was wondering if there is an ICC profile for Epson Exhibition Fiber paper for the Quadtone RIP. I like this paper a lot, and easily use it with the AWB driver for the Epson 3800. Now that the Exhibition Fiber comes in rolls, I'd like to be able to use this paper for panoramics longer than 30" (the longest cut sheet paper I current have) with the Quadtone RIP.

If there is not ICC profile available, does anyone have a suggestion how I can use the paper short of trying to create my own ICC profile? Creating ICC profiles is too techincal for me at this point to attempt.

Many thanks,

Bob Parker

Hi Bob,

You might try this. Eric Chan has 3800 & 3880 AWB profiles for a number of papers including Exhibition Fiber on his website. URL is http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/abwprofiles.html They are free to download. I use his profile for the 3880 and Ilford Gold Fibre Silk paper, it is working very well. Actually it works so well I had him do a custom color profile for the 3880 and GFS which is a whole lot better than the one supplied by Ilford. The cost for the custom was $20 which seems reasonable to me.

Eric seems like a really nice guy, responds promptly to emails, answers questions, and has a quick turn around time on the custom profiles. He works for or with Adobe in developing software for digital photography.

Hope the above's some help,

Bob Gaunt

Bob,
Thanks for your response. I have many of Eric's ICC profiles for the 3800 and I use them for the AWB driver for the 3800 printer. Can I use his profile for the Quadtone RIP as well? (As I think about it, why couldn't I use his versus having a custom ICC profile made for the RIP?). If I can use his ICC for the Epson Exhibition Fiber, do you know how I can load it into the Quadtone RIP? I would like to load some other papers' ICC profiles as well. That would be great if I can do that.

Thanks again,

Bob

Re:Epson Exhibition Fiber ICC Profile

I am making small progress thanks to Bob's last suggestion. I downloaded 2 ICC profiles from Eric Chan's website for Exhibition Fiber and Hot Press Bright, and tried to follow the directions on the PDF Tutorial for the Quadtone RIP. I cannot find the download folder "Profiles/InstallScripts" in my Mac (Leopard 10.5) Hard Drive>Applications>QuadToneRIP>Profiles>3800-UC. There is an install command file in the 3800 folder, but it appears to be specifically for the pre-installed ICC profiles that came with the software. I cannot find a script for installing custom profiles anywhere, and I am not sure I understand the directions on how to use if from my reading several times of the PDF Tutorial.

In my Quadtone RIP folder under Applications are the following folders and files: (Folder)CurveDesign, (file)DiagnosticScript.command, (Folder)Eye-One, (Folder) Profiles, (file)QTR-Create-ICC, (file)QTR-Create-ICC-RGB, (file)QTR-CurveView, (file)QTR-License.rtf, (file)QTR-Linearize-Data, (file)Tutorial.PDF

I am sure this is an easy process, but I cannot figure out the exact places where I need to go, and the exact steps to follow to get these 2 ICC profiles in the system.

Can someone help with delineating the specific steps I need to follow to be successful?

Thanks again,

Bob Parker

Hello Bob,

Have you tried printing using the ABW driver using Eric's instructions? I'll be honest and say that you will be surprised with the results if you follow Eric's instructions.

Just my 2 cents,

Don Bryant

Bob,

I think you are confusing ICC profiles with QTR curves. These are two different things and are not interchangable. With this in mind, read throught the tutorials again and also check www.diallophotography.com/pdfs/ QTR workflow.pdf .

Don & David,

I will check out Diallo's PDF. I have used Eric's ICC for the ABW with great results, but I want to use the QTR for panoramic prints longer than 36 inches, as I understand the 3800 has length limitations of about 36 inches or so.

Thanks again.

Bob

Bob,

I may be wrong (I really hope I am wrong) but I thought that QTR did not overcome the 950mm length limitation of the 3800. I would love to learn otherwise!

Gotcha!

I believe the max length through the Epson driver is 37.4 inches. I can't understand why Epson placed a limit on that short of using a RIP.

Try this for longer prints.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re:Epson Exhibition Fiber ICC Profile

Roger, Bob, Don, etc.

QTR does allow long prints on the 3800/3880. It is set for 128
inches rather than the 37in that the Epson driver allows.
The difficulty with long prints is that the printer has no roll paper
capability. So you need to get some roll paper
and cut off the appropriate length and then manually (and I do mean
holding it yourself) feeding the paper
into the back slot (Paper Feed: Manual Rear). Naturally you'll need
to define a large paper size for this.
I've done this for prints as large as 6 feet without any trouble.

For Exhibition Paper use the SilverRag QTR curves, for ICC try QTR
Gray Photo Paper (or leave out altogether).

Thanks Roy - that's exactly what I wanted to hear! Now if someone can tell me where I can get a copy of the 5.5 driver for the 3800 I can try the UDPS utility for colour as well.
