Centering prints on 2200

Centering prints on 2200

2005-09-16 by davidpichevin

Hello,

Does anybody know the secret to printing centered on a 2200, or at
least with exact margins? I have had this issue since I started
printing with the 2200, and on every program, Photoshop, Qimage, and
now QTR. No matter what I do, which settings I choose, which margins I
set, it is always lopsided,, with one margin larger than the others,
or smaller. Not too hard to deal with on a large print that will be
matted and framed, but on those 8x10 or 4x6 portraits it's really a pain.

My concern with QTR is that it has even fewer settings (going through
the GUI) than the other programs. All I can do is click "center" or
select a left and top margin. Center does not work, but the worst of
it is, selecting for example a 0.125 margin for left and top still
will not give me an exact 0.125 margin.

Example: I will print vertically an image at 3.75 inches wide on a
paper that is exactly 4" wide. I will specify a margin of 0.125 to the
left and 0.125 to the top. I should now have 0.125 to the top, left
and right, but nooooooo (suddenly thinking of John Belushi), I will
have a margin to the left that is less than 0.125 (visibly) and more
on the right. Center does the same, and differences seem to be even
larger on letter size paper.

Any idea?

Even when you print to file in Qimage? I use "print
to file" in Qimage and let Qimage center it and then
in QTR with "Centered" and "To Fit" checked. My 2200
prints come out perfectly centered.

Yes, I actually print to files in Qimage then import them into QTR for
print. It doesn't matter whether Qimage adds white borders or not.
Even without white borders, it still won't print centered when I check
center, and it still won't print one of the margins exactly how I set
it if I set it specifically. As for the To Fit option, that's
something I would never select. I do not want the picture to be
resized in anyway and that point, so that has to be 100%.

This centering problem is really a huge pain...

Now I'm not at home, but I wonder if QTR can let you set custom size
papers...

Yes. Click on "custom" under the paper size drop down menu and enter the
custom size in inches or mms.

How far off do you see it? 0.125 inch is quite small and just the
loading of the paper could vary enough to see it.
If you are seeing a consistent offset you can adjust the left margin in QTRgui.
If its variable then the issue is loading the paper.

David,
Maybe I missed this but how are you feeding the paper into the
printer? 8.5x11 through the normal tray? Rolls? 13x19 through the
back slot?

If the problems occurs only when you are feeding the paper in through
the back slot I have an answer that has worked for me. However just
so you know, I do not have the issue when standard size paper is fed
from the tray.

Hi Bruce,

Just from the standard loading tray at the top, with 4x6 and letter
size paper. Bigger sizes too but I don't care much size those get matted.

Hi Roy,

On a 4x6 it's a small margin, but it's still visible. I have been able
to reduce the difference by adding just a bit at the bottom (in a
landscape oriented photo). It's just weird. I have been trying to work
out the margins. I understand how the printable area works. I have
just composed a photo on a 4x6 that *can* be centered within the
printable area of the paper, respecting the minimal margins (it
appears to be 3.76 inches on a 4" high paper), and still it will print
one margin smaller than what is said to be the minimum margin at the
bottom and the opposite one larger. I guess it wouldn't be too
difficult to compensate manually, but it's just a pain to have to
spend so much time fixing something that should be done automatically.

The smaller than specified margin is always on the bottom of a
landscape format photo or to the right of a vertical one.
