Revised panels posted.

2004-09-26 by srmaietta

All,
I've been stewing these panels over in my head and posted a revised
setup to the files section..
Ive added my banana'd ASM-1 to the mix since its part of this whole
scheme and changed a few modules in the serge panels..

While I think the sequencer panel would probably serve my desires
more than a TKB, I still cant make up my mind, the allure of the TKB
is great. Got rid of the WAD threw a RING and PRC in its place..
Swapped a QUO for the PCO since I have two "normal" osc's on the ASM,
and exchanged the UAP for a DCSM.

Anyones opinions on DTG vs the new CLK? I made the swap since Ive
got a DTG in there already, but is the DTG more flexible in the long
run?

Thanks to John Duval for his experienced input!!

thanks for the remark, but experienced?? hahaha... i'm a novice really. There are many on this list who know more than i ever will and they are the ones who should come out of the woodwork and give their opinions. Which is just what my suggestions were..... opinions, nothing more. Different applications dictate different module selection and configuration. The "shop panels" were designed to address different uses. Ask yourself what your main objective is. Is is signal processing?, sequencing? ...so called "bug music" or space droning? Decided for yourself what where your main interest lies and then study the catalog, call Rex (again) and of course, listen to the input of the esteemed members on this list.

kind regards

When I got my panels years ago yes I spent a *lot* of time fussing and
analyzing. It's a sickness, I tell ya.
At some point you have to stop and take the plunge.

Would folks mind describing "bug music"? Is it
entirely a derogatory term? Who are some example
artists?

Related to "Glurp" ala Robert Rich. "Bestiary" might be a damned good
example:

http://www.robertrich.com/rrbestiary.html

A lot of Morton Subotnick's work ("Sidewinder", for example) would fall
in this category as well.

That help?

Heh...

Bug Music is what one does with a Model 15.

:)

kidding.

Well, actually not, but as dogs loves trucks, blah blah blah...

I think Paul Schreiber thunk this one up. From what I've gleamed, it's any
use of synthesizers that dares to go outside the confines of the 12 tone
set and the use of pitch and rhythm as the major compositional motifs.
Basically what I'm saying if it's not Rick Wakeman, Aphex Twin or Walter
Carlos, Paul's callin' it bug music.

Derogatory? Well, would you like to be compared to an arachnid?

Examples are numerous, too numerous to list here:

Lez speaks the truth with Rick and Mort. Then there's Stockhausen, Cage,
Appleton, Schrader, Babbit, Ussachevsky, Lanksy, Smiley, Laurie Speigel,
Kreiger and about 5000 more. Heck, throw in Stravinsky. Elliot Carter,
Harry Partch, Schoenberg, Berg (although those not electronic obviously),

...and basically every other composer I hold in great esteem!

probably the most well-known of all bug artists would be "adam and
the ants", but ziggy stardust's group "the spiders from mars" come in
a close second.

then again, "the beatles" might qualify as well...

nope. the group was "adam and the ants", he was "adam ant" and their
second LP, "kings of the wild frontier" was fucking great when i was
14 (1980) and still is great today. the 45 of "stand of deliver" was
outstanding too, but right after that they started doing all this
lame "good two shoes" crud and i lost interest.

no idea. maybe a subject for vh1's "where are they now?"

Put on probation a few years ago for threatening people with a
fake pistol. Somehow appropriate for a Malcolm McLaren creation...

You guys are just killin' me here!!....... radio....??? what's radio anyway?? any meaningful radio disappeared from Portland almost twenty years ago. All we have left is NPR and Oregon Public Broadcasting and they hardly do music anymore. We do have a community radio station but it has mostley been co opted by cultural zealots with some kind of agenda. Sometimes you can hear good blues if your lucky.oops...go a little OT ... sorry.

Amazing as it seems, in this southern redneck town - we have an AMAZING
college radio station here. WUSC

I'll listen to NPR when they're playing music, but other than that..

WUSC is mostly free format. You could get Bach right next to the "Sponge
Bob" theme song, right next to some unheard of local band right next a
punk version of the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You".

They also have themed shows - all Japanese (pop) music speed death metal
or two hours of movie soundtracks or show tunes.

Damn good fun!

there was a documentary about him on C4 here in the UK recently...
seems he has suffered throughout his life with a serious bi-polar disorder/manic
depression which maybe explains the above behaviour....
