You're so lucky to have all that variety. All we have is Classic rock (70s) Oldies (50s 60s) and various mutations of soft, easy listening, christian, pablum, sachrine, downey, and other forms of elevator music, plus one "hard rock" ( what ever that is ) and of course we have the local Rap and HipHop station that is owned by Paul Allen, the guy who owens the Portland TrailBlazer basketball freak show. When the roster became predominatley african american about ten years ago, the players bitched to Allen that they didn't have anything to listen to while they were here working and later on, living. So dear uncle Paul bought a radio station and converted it to Rap and HipHop twenty four seven. And that folks is what portland radio is all about. Oh yea, i forgot, we have to top forty country stations which is enough to make one barf on contact. It's a far cry from the days when Bill Walton was on our basketball team. He had it written into his contract that Grateful Dead music would be played during halftime and at the end of each game.
During the years that i played on the pro country music curcuit in the local tri state area, we would occasionaly open for some traveling name acts and most of the players backing these acts would be multi instrumentalists with many diverse tastes. To a man they all said that of all the cities they travelled, Portland had by far, hands down, the worst radio they had ever heard. No taste, and a serious lack of diversity. Even the country players were shocked that there was not one station that had a blues format or at least a blues program. And to make it even worse, there is a rumour that OPB is going to, or has cancelled ECHOEs. The only programme where you could hear space music or electronics or any kind of "world music" ..... or just plain music in general. So a word of caution to those traveling to Oregon. BYOM!! hahahah

Amazing as it seems, in this southern redneck town - we have an AMAZING
college radio station here. WUSC
I'll listen to NPR when they're playing music, but other than that..
WUSC is mostly free format. You could get Bach right next to the "Sponge
Bob" theme song, right next to some unheard of local band right next a
punk version of the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You".
They also have themed shows - all Japanese (pop) music speed death metal
or two hours of movie soundtracks or show tunes.
Damn good fun!
