SKB case?

SKB case?

2004-10-08 by johnrichoux

Anybody have an extra STS-modified SKB mixer case they would like to sell? I have one
for my original "Blue Funstation", but in the years since I have added 3 more panels. I
would like to be more portable than I am at present. I checked with Rex and he isn't
messing with them anymore.

I would also be interested in any suggestions for a good alternative.

What's the required modification?

I'm really not sure. Rex tried to explain to me in some detail, but I didn't follow it to well
over the phone. I have a standard SKB mixer case to compare it with. Of course there are
the obvious things he did - adding the connectors, and the braces have teeth that sort of
ratchet into position. And the cool little strap handle for pulling it up. But he seemed to
imply that the standard case just wouldn't work - some problem with clearances.

I guess I should go ahead and move my panels into the other case and see what doesn't
happen. I suppose I was just taking a shortcut - if someone has an already prepared one
laying around, I would take it off there hands at a reasonable price.

If anyone on the list can explain the differences in simple terms I would appreciate it.

Thank you for interest

Hey, i dont even have any serge stuff at all (i lurk on many lists for technique though) but i do have a couple of other modulars on skb pop-up mixer cases.
Appart from the (aproximatly) 5" depth limits, theres also a problem at the back/top of the case, where there are brackets that hold the case rack frame when its folded down.
Check Larry's (Stooge) page for some relevent info, better then i could explain. Your looking for the paragraph that says
"Cutouts in the back and optional top allow the case back to just clear the internal tabs so the SKB case can close with the back attached. "
As i say, i have no serge, but 3 pop up mixer cases, housing doefper, a.solutions, efm and oakley modules.
These are the only issues that i can guess at.
Cheers, Julian

Regarding SKB popup cases, there are two brackets in the back used as ledges for when the rack is folded down. These brackets will scrape against the deeper 4 inch chassis that STS prefers to use. SKB modification requires cutting these brackets lengthwise so they don’t obstruct the deeper Serge chassis.

Also as mentioned mounting the power distribution board somewhere is a good idea.

I have 3 panels in an SKB case... to clear the power distribution board
the bottom panel must be a TKB or a panel that's in the less-deep
aluminum box.

For awhile i had three panels in a SKB. I never had any problem as long as i wasnt trying to mount one of the deeper chassis. Rex makes what he calls a "transit" chassis which will fit into just about anything. Most of the panels i have will fit into the SKB, but i don't take it out anymore so the case sits in the attic. But it can be done, and you can mount the connectors and distribution rails on the side also. Makes for a nifty little portable system.

Keep on Patchin'!

Re: SKB case?

Thanks to everybody who chimed in. I have a much better picture of the problem. Rex
indicated that I without modification I would be unable to tilt-up the rack. I can see that
now - by comparing my two cases, the two brackets in the back of the STS case have been
shaved 1/16". I could use the case 'as is' if I was only interested in temporary transport.
And it is clear to see that you have to have a thinner chassis panel in the bottom position
because of the power connectors.

What about the two tilt arms with the locking teeth? My standard case uses pressure
knobs. Did SKB provide those as a custom option for STS? They are riveted in place.

I'm still interested if someone wants to sell one that came from STS.

thanks again

p.s. to Julian (and other lurkers) - I hope your present modular systems give you as much
satisfaction as my Serge does for me.

As a postscript to this discussion-

I took my standard SKB mixer case and after about ten minutes of filing on the two back
plates, I can put a 4" panel in the top position, and it opens without scratching. ("A silly
millimeter longer!") My power connector is sort of dangling around in there, so I will
eventually have to do something about that.

Thanks again to everybody that provided input on this problem.
