interfacing....

interfacing....

2008-02-22 by Carlos

I am going to be one of the 'new guys' getting into serge with these
new m series.

Any advice on interfacing the serge (specifically the upcomign
m-series though I assume is the same for all) with other modulars?

I have doepfer synth, motm,synth.com and some modcan b(the 1/4" type,
not the banana plug one).

I was thinking of getting one of those .com banana to 1/4" adaptors or
the motm one(which has grounds for each plug?) but not sure either
will work properly?

Welcome to the list, Carlos!
I have three suggestions, assuming you do not wish to build your own interface. One is to buy custom banana-to-xx cables (I believe Rex still offers these).
Another option is to design a custom 1U rack of adaptors, attenuators, etc, available from Michael Ford of Metalbox:
Finally, since you already have a Modcan B system, you might ask Bruce Duncan to deliver a 48B with one banana jack on each mult section.
Remember that all systems including the interface must be grounded together. Also, search the list archives for discussions about using systems with different voltage standards together - this can generally be done without problems, but certain factors have to be adjusted for, such as when attempting to drive a VCA with a 0-10v range using a 0-5v envelope signal.
Best wishes,
Chris Sawyer

Hi Carlos,

I had a similar need and Mr.Rex was kind enough to build for me a 1RU passive interface converting banana to 1/4" and back sporting a common ground that connects to my PS4.

Although the unit does not offer any scaling or buffering (that's what the 'convenience' function blocks/cells are for <in the new M-speak>), it is fully enclosed in a gorgeous chassis (as opposed to other interfaces of this kind I've had from other people where every thing's just handing from the faceplate and begging for interference:) and beautifully spaced out (10 points; 10x banana + 10x 1/4" Switchcraft + common GND on banana); we were originally aiming for 16 or 12, but decided on 10 in order to comply with Rex's standards.

It's not an uber-sophisticated device:).. but is crafted using the same quality components the STS puts into shop panels / m-odules and was designed to offer the least interference from surrounding gear. If I'm not mistaken, the chassis was made by the same folks that make the ROX enclosures for the shop panels.

Hi Ross,

I've posted some pix of the critter (along with pixs of my system while I was at it).. unfortunately.. they're kinda crappy in quality.. sorry :(very dark studio with odd color lighting).. I plan on taking some nicer ones in the upcoming future

cheers
