my first post

2009-04-01 by Christopher Jacob Recording Device

Hi,

This is exciting I've been talking to Rex and will be placing an order for my first panel very soon (it's an animal) and I thought since I'm on here I'd post an introduction and thanks.

I'm an experimental musician in Vancouver, Canada and presently I'm working on an interpretation of Dante's Divine Comedy for music concrete and North American Haiku. I've been blogging it at www.wiresource.blogspot.com

I've been learning synthesis for over a year and have built up a small studio. Originally I was pining for a Buchla but when I started to actually research my options I found the Serge instruments more intriguing, more musical and far more affordable to get started on. In the interest of brevity I won't go on much longer in this post. I'm glad to be here.

By the way, if anyone has an M-odule they might want to trade for a fully restored MS-20 please contact me off list at i.am.using.the.internets@... I'd love to get my hands on a creature or other small beast while I wait for my animal.

Thanks.
Chris

Welcome, Chris -- that's exciting, indeed! Good luck with your 'hunt'.

Regarding traveling with your Serge and portability, take a look in the yahoo group photo album for this list. Some of the members have Zero case mounted systems that look very nice and didn't require any hassle to install, I don't think. Other users have had success with custom made folding cases a la Buchla.

question on connecting panels to power supply

2009-04-01 by Ancient Eyeball Recipe

>

yeah, well, i have no common sense about this end of things, so I'd
rather ask before just plugging it all in. I can only see one
solution, but I'd rather play it safe, given my incompetence in this
area....

Just got my animal panel, to join the tkb. So, the tkb has one wire
coming out of it, and the animal panel has 2 - one of them has 4
prongs, and the other has 3 (one missing).

Then there is the distributor thingee and the power supply. So, I'm
thinking that obviously both of the animal panel cables + the tkb
cable get plugged into the distributor, and then the distributor goes
into the power supply. I can't see any other way. But no matter how
stupid this question might be, I"ll suffer the indignity of asking it.
Also have an email out to Rex....

Awesome!
The quick answer is, your thinking is correct! Plug both Animal cables and the TKB power cable into the distributor.

Hi Chris,

I have just joined this group. Nice to see someone from Vancouver here. I moved here from the UK in 2007.

I have just go into modulars myself, having just about filled 4 rows of Eurorack in the last 4 months.

I have just started exploring Serge with the idea of getting a very basic system together by the end of the summer.

Good luck

Thanks Richard,

are you in Van too then?

There seems to be a small but impenetrable SDIY community in town and that's about it it would seem I love this city but as far as electronic music goes it sucks.

Re: my first post

2009-04-06 by Dave Leith

Hi Chris and Richard

I'm also in Vancouver. I don't own a Serge but I am building a few older Serge circuits that one sees on the web (Synapse magazine). Chris, I had a quick peek at your blog earlier today. Some interesting projects.

As for the secret society of modular synth there are a few others on the SDIY list who are also in Vancouver or Victoria.
Synth-diy mailing list Synth-diy@... http://dropmix.xs4all.nl/mailman/listinfo/synth-diy

There is also a small groupin Vancouver who meet on a random basis to discuss building stuff. I can forward the email adress if you are interested.

Some music/sounds and some of my modular project are at http://minimalist.davidleith.com/DeitzModSynth2.html
One of the "quasi" bands that I play with is Spectrum Interview http://spectruminterview.com/index.html

If you feel the need to jam or just compare synth knobs, dials and sounds let me know.

Hi Chris,

Yep, I am in Vancouver (Kitsilano). Moved here 18 months ago (from the UK) and just got back into making music after many years.

Also just starting to see what is happening in Vancouver, music wise there does not seem to be a great deal but I maybe wrong.

I should have my Eurorack completed in the next month (if there is such a thing as complete) and I am seriously considering getting a Serge module or two later in the summer.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Dave,

It is good to know there are people interested in synths in Vancouver!!!. I am quite a drone fan myself, great stuff on your modular site. I have only taken the Eurorack plunge myself (you can see it here http://www.flickr.com/photos/40626814@N00/3386680194/ )

But I am interested in getting into DIY.

Cheers,
