one step back two steps forward... or the status update for May 20, 2006

2006-05-21 by Andrew D Kirch

Ok, it's been an interesting day here at SynthModules Center (Brice: you
meant hell right? Me: yeah, probably). We found a tray with 6 boards that
were not soldered where we thought we had them all done, and some boards
that had been mated to faceplates without grounds soldered on them. We
spent a good deal of time getting the boards finished, all the faceplates
ready to mate to the boards, and the finished boards from last week
tested. The general status of the components follows:
boards: all are now soldered (really we even mean it this time, but don't
hold us to it)
face plates: all the grounds are now soldered and they are ready to be
mated to the boards
led panels: these were finished last week, nothing new to report here

**** The Gary Chang Update ****
Gary,
Someone, and I'm not mentioning names misplaced one of the standoffs to
your board. He spent every lunch break last week hunting down the correct
standoffs at the various Radio Cracks, and Fried Electronics. This
weekend he mated your board to the face plate, and constructed the custom
LED ribbon cable which is significantly different for your board than for
the others. (thought you were special didn't you?)

****

So, here's what remains (or the part you're all interested in). With all
the components completed all that is left is to mate the face plates to
the boards and wire them up, test them, box them and ship them. We tested
4 modules, 3 of which passed, and one of which developed a bad 1/8" jack
during testing. Brice plans to get the faulty jack replaced during the
week and these modules should ship to the next people expected to receive
them. I will note for clarity that these are the modules I mentioned last
week as completed, however the testing takes about 40 minutes per
completed module and Brice simply did not have time during the week. The
next four people receiving boards should be hearing from Brice sometime
this week that their board has in fact shipped. Anyway that's all from
SynthModules Hell this week, next week is the Indianapolis 500 (and the
city will come to a halt), so stay tuned for two weeks from now, when, in
an exciting turn of events I will manage to get myself electrocuted.

Gary,
All of you should thank Brice as well, more than half of the work is
his. He is far faster at getting the soldering world done on these
boards (c'mon Brice share the Mmetcal already!). The motivation to get
this done so that he can move on to other things is mostly mine. I
don't think it's easy sometimes when you start out to do something, and
end up in the position he found himself in. These modules are complex
and complicated pieces of equipment to assemble. They take a
significant amount of time, there are many left to finish, and many that
have been finished, all of which took time away from his family. I
believe, and I think he realizes that he badly overstretched his
resources to finish them. With that being said, they will get done, and
that should occur soon.
I am operating from the interesting position that I have nothing
whatsoever invested in this which gives me the extraordinary ability to
be blunt. All of you are upset with Brice, frankly put, his lack of
communication has not helped this. All of you are angry with him, and I
think that things have been said or done here that have caused him to be
angry at some of you. (I note here that though this reply is directed to
Gary, the statements here may not be, and are intended more as a
generalization) I think this is for everyone an unfortunate situation.
Brice finds it very difficult to deal with what has happend, as I
doubt very much that he intended this to happen, but it has and the
reality of the situation isn't going to change by him ignoring it. That
doesn't make it any less attractive to try, and perhaps he's guilty of
having done so. I am hoping that this will end shortly and that all of
you will have your modules.
If any of you have further questions please let me know. Exact shipping
dates are probably not possible at this point but you should hear
something in weeks not months. Every chance we get to work on these I
will update you on Brice's progress since the last e-mail I've sent, and
the progress that day, as well as a general sense overall of where the
modules are at as far as reaching completion... And Gary because his
module is somewhat different in design will probably get more detailed
information.
