Yes, that makes a lot of sense. Max/MSP is quite powerful.
At the risk of making further gross errors, I can't help but mention that
there is a similar program that is freeware called csound:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound
that might be a good option for some. There are no doubt many other
varied options for capture and analysis, too.
