I was going to do a festival at Montgomery College's new Performing Arts Center
but thought better of it considering the character and behavior of the people at
Levnet.
Decency appears to be a thing of the past for many people today and a gathering
of people who delight in lies, insults and slanders, even if that is a small
percentage of the number of participants, is likely to leave a bad taste in
someone's mouth.
I would like to play at this event, but I would not like to run into anyone from
levnet.
However, a UFC cage fight would be agreeable. I suppose it would have to be able
to hold about twelve of them and myself at one time. While it would be an
entertaining spectacle, I don't think that it would be theremin related unless
the rules permitted one to use one's theremin as an offensive weapon. As a
matter of fact, I have done that with a plate antenna this very weekend in Las
Vegas. My opponent thought better of the situation and offered me a cigarette as
a token of apology and respect which I graciously accepted (I do not smoke) and
we parted with mutual respect and dignity. That is something I have learned to
never expect from those at Levnet. It is regret able to see such people posting
here regardless of what contributions they may offer for the cost of dealing
with people like that is too dear.
Since it is unlikely that this cage fight would be considered to be appropriate
and even less likely that anyone who deserves such would enter into such a cage
with myself, I would think that if I were to participate, it should be away from
the actual venue, concert, workshop and seminar locations. I offer to do
extreme theremin events in any appropriate locations in the Saint. Louis area as
per Dave's suggestions. The Saint Loius Arch comes to mind, as well as bluffs
over the river, caves or other scenic outdoor locations. Battery operated
theremins and portable battery powered amps would be required and I have a
digital recorder that can handle 8 tracks. I also have four hd video cameras.
I could also do a workshop on how easy it is to play the theremin using the
angling technique, but that would be anathema, heresy and an affront to
tradition, despite the technique's long history. This would also have to be away
from the main event lest precision "aerial fingerists" have their hackles
raised. I would suggest that a quarter mile distance should be an adequate
buffer zone.
Outdoor performances and busking at "people places" in town could be used to
draw attention to the event and gather a larger audience. I could do that and
avoid the event all together thus insuring peace and tranquility.
Of course, peace and tranquility would not make the evening news. We could learn
a lot from our brothers in the rap and hip hop field when it comes to PR and
making yourself famous, notorious and fabulously wealthy.
Anchor - "In the news tonight, two rival groups of thereminists in town for a
Theremin Festival rioted and caused a ruckus today in the town center and made a
lot of really strange noises - coming up right after these commercial messages."
Co-Anchor - "Sandy, just what IS a theremin?"
Anchor - "Stay tuned and we will show you!"
A press release and a handful of players is all it takes. TV news directors love
comedy.
Some other people do not.

Subject: [Aetherphon] I want a Spellbound theremin festival in 2012
Hello all,
I'm sending this message to all of my subscribers on spellboundradio and
aetherphon (I've you're on one but not the other, e-mail me and I'll set
you up), plus Levnet and my Facebook and Twitter resources as well. The
idea is that I establish a critical mass of interest and support so that
it doesn't just become yet another flight of fancy that I end up
forgetting about. :-)
For a couple of years now, I've been inspired by the theremin festivals
put on by Moog, as well as Gordon's annual event in the UK, and even
Coralie's Swiss event. Last year, Olivia observed that I was perhaps
uniquely positioned to pursue a theremin festival, and I've been
pondering the idea for awhile now. Late last year, I arranged lunch
with Dr. Fred Willman, coordinator of Music Education at the University
of Missouri at St. Louis, who turns out to be the only member of UMSL's
music faculty who owns and plays a theremin! Total stupid luck, I only
picked him to contact because of his position at the school. So he had
some interest, but without more momentum, things didn't go anywhere last
year. I'm hoping that we can get something rolling so that in two
years, Labor Day weekend of 2012 (assuming the world hasn't ended by
then ;-) maybe we can get something rolling.
I struck upon the idea of UMSL as a host organization because they would
have the facilities to host such an event, would be positioned to
scrounge for money to fund it, has a world class performing venue (the
Touhill Arts Center, home of the Arianna String Quartet), has a radio
station for the inevitable simulcasting, has a movie theatre for showing
theremin movies, plus it's on the light rail line from the airport.
If you have experience organizing festivals, I would like to hear from
you. I would like to write up an organizational plan by the end of the
year and at least sketch an outline of the event. If you think you
might be interested in attending a festival in St. Louis, please drop me
a quick note about that too. If you have ideas about what you think
you'd like to see and hear at such a festival, I'm open to your ideas.
Thanks for your time, and I hope to get feedback from you!
