Not a newcomer as I think I was one of the original people on the list!
I'm Susi but better known under my stage name Miss Hypnotique. I started
playing theremin in 2000 (home made then an etherwave, later a TVox Tour and
Etherwave Pro) and have done various recordings, live shows, radio and tv
appearances. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and chanteuse and used to play a
lot of different things (mainly keyboards, clarinet, saxophone and theremin)
with various indie bands including Nought, Heist, Flowers of Hell,
Intelligentsia, Gwyneth Herbert and Dawn of the Replicants.
Currently, I have two projects I'm most excited about - Babyslave - a 'post
industrial micro ensemble' about to release our first album and associated
online community (see http://www.babyslave.net and the blog at
http://www.babyslave.wordpress.com) and my ongoing gothic electronic
chanteuse project, Hypnotique - I've released two albums ("The Hanging
Garden" and "Pact With The Devil") and working on album no. 3. Slowly.
With the theremin, I've done quite a few things:
- a debut of the Etherwave Pro in Denmark for Bob Moog in 2004, and we were
lucky enought to interview Bob for the radio series "Switched On Radio"
which myself and fellow thereminist Bruce Woolley did for Resonance FM in
2003/4. It's a series about early electronic music, and the forerunner was
a show called "Into the Ether: The Music of the Theremin" which was a
collection of international music featuring theremin, an interview with
Steve Martin and various radio plays featuring historic theremin players!
You can still download the radio shows at: http://www.switchedonradio.co.uk
This was a predecessor to David Vesel's "Spellbound" and we had a hoot doing
it. I believe my studio was taken over by spirit of Lev during the radio
drama recordings as we suffered a 6 hour powercut during an optimum point!
I've also done a few shows with Bruce Woolley and the Radio Science
Orchestra and commercial live shows playing theremin with piano (jazz,
classical, easy listening) at weddings, corporate event launches and some
workshops for children and adults and the odd bit of teaching. Oh and not
forget some terrible stints at Cabaret including an act called "the Ether
Diva" featuring a Russian theremin-playing spy who played James Bond songs
on theremin. In 2002/3 I was taught by Lydia Kavina.
I'm perhaps best known for doing UK TV appearances - ranging from good to
bad to indifferent. I've been on the house band for Channel 5's "House of
Astonishment", Living TV's "Loose Lips", something dodgy for Asian TV with
inventor Tony Bassett and most recently "Paul O'Grady Show" for Channel 4
and "James May's 20th Century" for BBC2/Open University.
Anyway, video/downloads/CDs/everything else on my website:
