Welcome newcomers and oldcomers to Aetherphon!

2007-08-18 by David V

Hello all,

It's been a heck of a week. First, inviting the
theremin@yahoogroups.com folks over to join the list, then changing the
list name after finally coming up with a good list name. :-)

I thought that it's been awhile and we've grown by about 1/3rd in the
last 3 months, so if you have a moment, why don't you introduce, or
re-introduce, yourself to the group?

Go ahead, the mic is open. :-)

David V

Hello All,

Since I am new to this group, here is a short introduction.

I am a new theremin player, just bought mine not long ago and don't
know too much.

I live in West Los Angeles and am looking for an instructor, or at
least a more experienced player to give me some tips and pointers.

And I have a question for the group: how important is ear training to
the theremin player?

I look forward to many great discussions.

I'll give a brief re-introduction for the benefit of the new folks,
though most of the rest of you know me all too well. :-)

My name is David Vesel, I administer this list, and I also host the
weekly Internet radio program and podcast, "Spellbound, a brief program
of music for theremin". I don't play the theremin, though I do own one,
a Big Briar Etherwave Standard, which I vow to learn to play someday.
Meanwhile, my service to the theremin community is to provide forums for
discovering music and performers.

Welcome everyone, and thank you for making this forum a success! :-)

Hello all,
I play a theremin built from kits. I made both antennae pitch and run the
volume through a foot peddle, thus I have a polyphonic theremin. I housed
the whole thing in a gerbil ball painted silver to make it look like
Sputnik. I use it in a ska/reggae band I'm in, 12 Cents for Marvin (
www.12cents.com). It works great for our dub songs. You can see pics on
our band's site or my myspace (www.myspace.com/aaronious01). I also run it
through an echo/delay peddle and a phase shifter.
I've been playing it since 2000 and the crowds always love it.

I'm glad this site is up and running (again). Good job and thanks!
Aaron

Hello Curt!

To everyone else, Curt first told me about Big Briar
(now Moog) back in the '90s. It is thanks to him that
I started playing Theremin in the first place.

Glad to see you playing, Curt!

Peace

Carvin

I forgot to introduce myself.

I am Carvin Knowles and I play theremin. I bought my
theremin in 1999 and my first gig was playing a giant
new-years-eve party in downtown L.A. that same year,
ushering in the "future" with the instrument of the
future.

For the first several years, I mostly played with DJs
and have logged time with the Soulphonic Sound System,
The Syrups, DJ Bryan Corbet, DJ Chris Monaco, and The
Backyard Bangers. Once I played a wedding with the
famed DJ Z-Trip. My coolest show was one of my
smallest. I played to a small crowd in the "prayer
room" at the House of Blues, New Orleans in October of
2004 wit DJ Joelskool.

My style is both melodic and groovy. I don't have the
hand technique of Clara Rockmore, but I can still flow
a good melody.

When I'm not waving my hands in the air over my Big
Briar Etherwave, I write music for indy films and
documentaries. My most famous work plays while Jason
Biggs gets....um....busy with an apple pie.

In addition to theremin, I play brass, double reeds,
flute, guitars, bass, vintage synthesizers (I own two
old Moogs), Turkish ud, English lute and gong
and...well...whatevery I can get my hands on.

I've only recorded a handful of theremin works. I keep
intending to do more but life gets busy.

I really love listening to theremin music. As the old
phrase goes, it sends me.

So keep it flowin'

Peace

Carvin

Hi everyone, my name is Kelly and I live in Los Angeles. I play in a band called "Potato Bug". As well as the Theremin, I play the MicroKorg, and a few other simple percussion instruments. I really love "lounge" and spacey music of the 50's & 60's. A friend let me borrow his CD soundtrack of "Forbidden Planet" electronic music by Louis & Bebe Barron...if you haven't heard it...it is awesome! Out of this world!!!

Hello.

My name is David Bohn, and I am a composer and multi-instrumentalist
with several friends who play theremin, and a personal interest in
early electronic instruments and music (theremin, ondes, trautonium,
french concrete from the 50's, etc). Some of my electronic/concrete
stuff is available on this CD (samples will be available soon on this
web page):

intro

2007-08-21 by Gordon Charlton

Hi. I'm Gordon.

Not a newcomer, but I haven't posted for a while.

I've been playing theremin for about a year and ten months. I perform
and record as Beat Frequency - I've got a track on Electronic Bible 3
and play on a few tracks on Sonic Weekend - both from White Label
Music and both on iTunes. I've done a few gigs and organized a bit of
a get-together for thereminists in the UK a few weeks ago.

I enjoy making odd little videos to go with the music, so you can
find everything I have recorded on the videos page of my myspace
profile - with the exception of the most recent - moths are made of
dust - which is visible from the front page of the profile. (Some
weird myspace bug means it doesn't appear on the videos page.)

There's also a few of the videos on youtube as well - in case myspace
is being all slow and crashy again - but the sound is better on myspace.

Style - experimental (and I really mean it!)

Can you tell me more about this release? What instruments are used?
What is the extent of your involvement with the CD? I noticed a couple
of Bohns on there.

Re: [Aetherphon] Newcomer intro

No instruments, just slicing and dicing sounds on this CD.

Bohnmedia is a small label my brother James started as an adjunct to
his work as a recording engineer-- he's also heavily into
circuit-bending, and previously designed a few alternate
MIDI-controllers, including the Plaid-Jacket MIDI- controller (sort
of self-explanatory), and the Dangertron, a MIDI-controller made from
circular saw-blades (I kid you not); both of these are now
mothballed, the plaid jacket being particularly fragile. He was also
involved in a project involving remote-controlled toy pianos, but I
don't know any more about it.

This is the first of a projected series of limited-run, themed
anthology CDs; the series will be curated by myself and my brother. I
suspect that we'll both contribute tracks to each CD as it happens (I
did three tracks totalling about 9 minutes, and generated the cover
graphic; my brother did two tracks totalling 12 minutes, and did the
actual design work on the CD).

Given that a mutual friend of ours plays theremin, I wouldn't
discount the possibility of a theremin-themed CD down the road,
though it won't be until 2009 at the absolute earliest.

Newcomer intro

2007-08-25 by Lunette Records

Not a newcomer as I think I was one of the original people on the list!

I'm Susi but better known under my stage name Miss Hypnotique. I started
playing theremin in 2000 (home made then an etherwave, later a TVox Tour and
Etherwave Pro) and have done various recordings, live shows, radio and tv
appearances. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and chanteuse and used to play a
lot of different things (mainly keyboards, clarinet, saxophone and theremin)
with various indie bands including Nought, Heist, Flowers of Hell,
Intelligentsia, Gwyneth Herbert and Dawn of the Replicants.

Currently, I have two projects I'm most excited about - Babyslave - a 'post
industrial micro ensemble' about to release our first album and associated
online community (see http://www.babyslave.net and the blog at
http://www.babyslave.wordpress.com) and my ongoing gothic electronic
chanteuse project, Hypnotique - I've released two albums ("The Hanging
Garden" and "Pact With The Devil") and working on album no. 3. Slowly.

With the theremin, I've done quite a few things:

- a debut of the Etherwave Pro in Denmark for Bob Moog in 2004, and we were
lucky enought to interview Bob for the radio series "Switched On Radio"
which myself and fellow thereminist Bruce Woolley did for Resonance FM in
2003/4. It's a series about early electronic music, and the forerunner was
a show called "Into the Ether: The Music of the Theremin" which was a
collection of international music featuring theremin, an interview with
Steve Martin and various radio plays featuring historic theremin players!
You can still download the radio shows at: http://www.switchedonradio.co.uk
This was a predecessor to David Vesel's "Spellbound" and we had a hoot doing
it. I believe my studio was taken over by spirit of Lev during the radio
drama recordings as we suffered a 6 hour powercut during an optimum point!

I've also done a few shows with Bruce Woolley and the Radio Science
Orchestra and commercial live shows playing theremin with piano (jazz,
classical, easy listening) at weddings, corporate event launches and some
workshops for children and adults and the odd bit of teaching. Oh and not
forget some terrible stints at Cabaret including an act called "the Ether
Diva" featuring a Russian theremin-playing spy who played James Bond songs
on theremin. In 2002/3 I was taught by Lydia Kavina.

I'm perhaps best known for doing UK TV appearances - ranging from good to
bad to indifferent. I've been on the house band for Channel 5's "House of
Astonishment", Living TV's "Loose Lips", something dodgy for Asian TV with
inventor Tony Bassett and most recently "Paul O'Grady Show" for Channel 4
and "James May's 20th Century" for BBC2/Open University.

Anyway, video/downloads/CDs/everything else on my website:

Word. :-) Spellbound owes a lot directly to Into the Ether, and if you
folks haven't listened to it yet, you should. Especially the theremin
disco. :-) The "Moon Theremin Recital" is good too.
