Jim,
From what I understand, the B3 is a bit small. In theremins, size --
or at least length -- matters. In particular, it's the distance between
the pitch rod and the volume antenna. If they are too close together,
they will interfere with each other, limiting the playability of the
instrument.
On the other hand, Thomas Grillo plays one on occasion, and he manages
some pretty decent precision out of it.
Personally, I would recommend something larger. The Moog Etherwave
(MSRP $399) is the typical entry level theremin. The Kees Enkelaar
theremin (MSRP <$200) is also highly regarded as an entry level instrument.
