Hypnotique on POG?

Hypnotique on POG?

2006-05-21 by David V

Hello,

Did anyone over in the UK see Hypnotique on TV a couple of weeks ago?

Maybe if Susi is here she can talk about how that got put together.

I missed it, dagnabbit. But... I found a video clip on her website.
Hurrah!

Here...

http://www.traveldocumentaries.co.uk/hypnotique/multimedia/video.htm

(Good clip, but the audio compression is very intrusive. :-( )

The other people are

Paul O'Grady. Bitchy former TV drag comedian and early evening light-
hearted chat show host. Your auntie would think him a bit saucy.

Eamonn Holmes. Morning TV presenter, also host to "Songs Of Praise"
Sunday Christian church music programme. Also seen on daytime quiz
shows. Your auntie would think him lovely.

Hola David & Gang,

Yes! The Channel 4 show was a success! But judge for yourself...You can
see the evidence on my website:
http://www.hypnotique.net/multimedia/video.htm
Did I come off looking like an idiot or a star? You decide!!

Overall the experience was good - 8 members of 'mable' - Masami Takeuchi's
17-piece theremin orchestra from Japan - were in the studio audience which
made it quite pressurised.
These things are so carefully planned and slick - I felt like there was some
censorship at play here (in the rehearsal when they said 'where did the
theremin come from?' - I was vettoed from using the word 'communist russia'.
) They also - between the soundcheck and the live show (yes, this was live
TV!) - removed the logo from my theremin by putting black tape on my
Etherwave Pro without my permission. I didn't notice until I got home and
watched the playback. A branding opportunity lost (along with perfect
lacquer finish on the Pro). Par for the course, I guess, this was one of
the biggest family shows on British TV and my weird occult-ish logo probably
wouldn't have gone down well with Mrs Trellis from Shoreham-by-Sea. Anyway,
I've had positive feedback and people have been getting in touch via My
Space
(http://www.myspace.com/misshypnotique - FYI!)

I'm keen to thereminists thoughts on this. I do all kinds of underground
things and I think mainstream TV is a nice, subversive contrast (I'm a 'z
list' celebrity!!) - but other people may think I'm selling the instrument
short and demeaning it by doing these things. Let's start a dialogue about
it!

PS - love what you're doing with Spellbound forum, David, definitely
necessary to have an alternative to Levnet.

I just watched the video, Susi- that was great fun! And you did great,
and showed lots of that magical quality: poise.

I think it's a great introduction to theremin for the public. And I
thought the clowning around by the two fellows was charming and had a lot
of personality. I can see why the show is popular. You didn't squeeze in
a performance of a serious concerto, but that's for another place. :)

If only I had seen something like that earlier in my life, heh. It would
have made an enthusiast out of me. It just takes seeing a brief spot like
that to get hooked, if you've got the bent for it. It all got across.

But she would have thoroughly approved of your frock!

The funniest part for me was your likening Eamonn Holmes and Paul
O'Grady to TG on your website. Now I have this image stuck in my head
of them morphing into Genesis and Cosey respectively and recreating
some of their Coum Transmissions escapades on live TV.

Goodness knows what Mrs Trellis would think of that.

> but other people may think I'm selling the instrument

And here's Mrs Merton now, with her "let's have a heated debate." :-)

Well, yeah, I'd prefer to see you on Later With Jools Holland, but
what the hey! If Armen Ra can do This Or That, why shouldn't Miss
Hypnotique do Paul O'Grady?

As for selling the instrument short... (do I get the impression from
your website that you have occasionally been criticised for not being
something you weren't actually trying to be?) ... well, let's talk
about didgeridoos. I have no doubt that with a lot of skill and
practice the right didgeridooist could find a place in a classical
orchestra, and I bet there are jazz didgeridoo players and goth
didgeridooists and so on but if you want the real deal you gotta go
to Australia and hear what the old guys do. Why? Because that is
music designed around the strengths of the instrument, not the
instrument bent to fit a genre. Anything else sells the instrument
short to some extent by focussing on the ability of the player to use
it for things that do not come naturally to it, rather than on the
inherent capabilities of the instrument.

So what is the natural music for the theremin? I don't think we have
figured that out yet - at least not in a formal sense. Casting around
the 'net I have found plenty of music theory for tonal and micro-
tonal instruments, but absolutely none for continuous pitch instruments.

So I guess I think everyone sells the instrument short!

You came across to me as a seasoned performer. If you had any kind of monitor
speaker it was hidden from the picture and to play well (as you did) in that
kind of situation is remarkable.

Funny thing about other performers -- they can be fiercely critical or
they can be extrememly empathetic. They certainly would be able to appreciate
what you were doing.

Just tell 'em that it was invented in the Northern Hemisphere. Nothing like
precision!

Warning to other musicians: be vigilant or you may end up pulling black tape
off of your Stradivarious. :O

Over here (in the US) they say, "Yeah, but will it play in Peoria?" :)

Have to do that later. I'm in the office and Myspace's ads uh...
won't play in Peoria. :)

You did a great job. I wish they would have given you more playing time in
proportion to the "comedy time".

Despite the brevity of the musical selection, they were able to see that the
Theremin can play music in the traditional sense and that performers, such as
yourself, are attracted to it. They were able to experience the Theremin's
magic as well as be entertained.

Congratulations, Susi!

A lot of consensus over here seemed to be that the hosts of the show
were kinda arses, but given the light nature of the show it could
probably not be otherwise. The American (or at least New Yawk)
equivalent would be Pamelia appearing on the Howard Stern show. (Of
course, Howard is on the opposite end of the spectrum from Paul O'Grady. :-)

But many folks who posted earlier wished that you'd had more time and
opportunity to stretch out as a performer and that your bit was *way*
too short!
