The machine came with a full complement of ram, the latest ROMs installed as well as the latest OS on a floppy. Like an idiot I was sick of booting it from the floppy, thinking the ROM OS was an older version, bought a set of ROMs off eBay, so I now have a spare set.

Hi,

That's realy strange indeed.
I quess you already know you must use "arrange" for removeblae drives (like zipdrives) and use "format" for real hard drives.
When you use "format" for zipdrives, you could damage the disk itself and it will become unuseable.

Zipdrives are working with the S1100. I have one S1100 with v4.3 myself, and I tested it with an external SCSI 100 zipdrive and later I build in an internal zip 100 drive and both works perfect.

The SCSI ID's are correct. The drive(s) must be terminated (The AKAI is terminated by factory, so that's all correct.
All I can suggest (if you have the possibility) is to connect both the zipdrive and SCSI hard drive to a PC. So you can test both drives (and the zipdisk(s) as well) and you can do a good DOS format first. Try to format/arrange again on the S1100 after.

One other thing you can try is to AKAI format the drives on a PC with Translator. Try to format/arrange again on the AKAI itself.

Cheers
