Loadin Akai libraries via SCSI

Loadin Akai libraries via SCSI

2011-11-29 by borisscrewbie

Hey guys!
Need your advice about loading samples in my S1100 via SCSI.
I know this has been discussed in the pages of the group, anyway can't get right choice.
I have a sampler and Adaptec ava2904 scsi card in my PC with mini centronics50->HD50 cable. As i understand, i have two choices - or buy some old 500mb SCSI hard drive, or some old compatible SCSI CD-Drive. Which way can be best to transfer samples from akai libraries to sampler? Which way is more comfortable. That's my first experience with SCSI, so sorry for lame question
I have pretty usual modern PC under Windows XP. Does both ways are compatible with it?

If you have a AKAI IB-103 SCSI interface card in your S-1100,- you´re be able to access and adress SCSI harddives, removable media drives
(ZIP, MOD & Syquest) - size of 520MB at max..
Pay attention these drives/media are formatted w/ 512 bytes/sector, especially if using MOD media 128MB - 520MB.
640MB and larger w/ 2048 bytes/sector won´t work for AKAI S-1xxx series samplers.
For CD-ROM, you need a compatible drive like old Apple 2x - 8x speed at max..

I have the same card in a older PC Win XP SP2 and the same cable.
Is worth nothing unless you have an application installed which recognizes a AKAI S-1xxx series sampler under WinXP and w/ the Adaptec card installed.
You must have installed a compatible ASPI in addition,- I use Frog ASPI or the ASPI Steinberg Wavelab 4 installs.
Steinberg Wavelab 4.01b is the latest Wavelab version which deals w/ SCSI,- but unfortunately not w/ the AKAI S-1xxx series samplers via SCSI.
It´s MIDI SDS only w/ Akai,- and that´s too slow.

I know my combo runs because I also have a EMU e64 sampler which is supported by Wavelab 4.01b via SCSI, under Win XP SP2 and exactlly this Adaptec card.

Unfortunately, I´m not aware of any application supporting a AKAI S-1xxx sampler on PC, Win XP and w/ a SCSI card build into that PC.

Old samplers need old gear.
I´m using 19" Synthax, HybridArts, Kronauer and Lacom 19" rackmount drives,- some include a SCSI (I or II) CD-ROM drive and HD, other´s include removable media drives.
I have Syquest 88MB removable media cardridges and 230MB Verbatim removable optical media.

If you find a PC application dealing w/ AKAI S-1100 under Win XP and the Adaptec 2904 card,- please let me know.

Thanks for fast answer, Pewe!
I' slowly dive into cryptic SCSI world)
In case of SCSI CD-Rom, compatible with S1100, i see the only trouble may be recording discs right for using it with tat old CD-Rom. Is that right? I have no need in SCSI harddrive in this case?
Cheers!

Boris

P.S. i just found some app for Akai old samplers, called NiceWave
http://www.nicey.com/free/nicewave.shtml
Can't check it because ASPI drver error, anyway maybe it can help to connect device via SCSI?

I need harddrives always and rarely CD-ROM drives.
You cannot burn anything on a CD RW drive w/ an AKAI sampler.
You need a compatible CD-ROM to read/load disks manufactured in AKAI format.
Best you have both and removable media for the backups.

No idea what this software you mention below does,- there´s no explanation and I wot install stuff on my machines I don´t know.
This software is written 1998,- so I doubt it´s compatible w/ Win XP,- more Win98 and 2K perhaps.

I said I´m unaware of any PC Win XP app communicating w/ AKAI S-1xxx sampler.

On the past, other apps for Macs as also older PC OS existed,- but I don´t have such a PC and OS anymore and I don´t want to.

I´ve all said,... buy the old stuff you need and work the old way.
