Hi,

Following is a part of the SCSI faq of the digidude website.
Hopefully it is helpfull to you:

(taken from: http://akaiscsifaq.digidude.net/)

"There are many compatible SCSI CD-ROM drives for the AKAI but
unfortunately I can confirm more of the older ones than the more
recent. These are:

- Pioneer DRU-124x 4xSpeed
- Pioneer DR-U12x Speed (let's say all Pioneer models do:)
- Panasonic 2x all models
- SONY 2x/4x all models
- Hitachi 4x
- Toshiba 4x XM-5401 TA (also mounted on CD3000)
- Toshiba 3401 SCSI
- Toshiba XM5701 12x (Can anyone confirm this 100%?)
- MAC external 2x CD drive (panasonic/matsushita)
- Plextor 12x, 20x,32x, 40x... (they all work but remember to set the
*BLOCK* jumper on the CDR/RW units!)
- Apple CD-300E
- Apple CD-600E
- Apple CD1200 (8x Internal)
- Panasonic LK-MC606BP (Matsushita 508)

CD-Writers:
Matsushita CDR 7502
Matsushita CR-8005A
Smart & Friendly 2006 CDR
Philips Omniwriter CD-RW external
Yamaha 4x write (CDr400)
Panasonic CW-7502 CDR (4x8)
Ricoh ?
Waitec ?

There are surely many other drives that work; please email me so I
can add them to the list. What I can surely say is that OLD NEC CD-
ROM drives *DO NOT WORK* with AKAI CDs. This due to a firmware
problem in the CD loading routine so when you try to read the
contents of the CD from your AKAI you get a HD READ ERROR message
(512bytes per sector handling problem). New NEC drives, on the
contrary, seem to have less problems, but I suggest you always test
before you buy."

Please let us know if it works.

Regards,

Frank

I recently bought a used Apple 600e and I hooked it up to the
S1000PB, but it does not seem to recognize it. What do I have to do,
I tried the SCSI soft key but it doesn't seem to do anything, bad
SCSI card?!?!?! Help please. I have only one CD rom that came with
the PB The guy who sold it says it has the 4.40 OS and some samples
on it but I can't seem to get it to work.

Hi,

Nice to hear from you !

regarding the cdrom:
Well, some people are convinced that your cdrom must work with the
S1000: "Many thanks to Alois Kleewein who has confirmed that the
S1000 works with Sony Spressa CD-R drives, as well as Apple 300e and
600e CD-ROM drives. Also, the S1000 apparently will NOT work with the
Yamaha crw 4260tx CD-R drive." (look at: http://www.planet-
zero.org/wiki/index.php/AkaiS1000PB ).

The problem might be the scsi card. Check the terminator resistors on
it. A common problem is that people remove the scsi cable when the
sampler is still powered. That can damage the scsi card. You may find
one at ebay or buy one from mutec in germany (see the links section).
Did you ckeck the SCSI FAQ for akai samplers ? (also look in the
links section) Make sure the problem is not in the cdrom drive! Check
that with a pc and make sure you use the right channel.

regarding choosing a sampler:
These days people go for a 'vintage' sampler like the S1000 / S1100
because of the sound or the full compatibility with so many sample
cd's - not so much because of the features. We got that discussion
before. I have a yamaha and a mpc2000xl and for some sounds I prefer
the S1100 without any hesitation. An Mpc60 / S950 is on my wishlist,
just because of that sound.

Rgds,
Frank

I'm still having problems with my S1000 reading from
the CD-ROM drive. If possible can you walk me through
all of the soft key steps to prompting the S1000 to
load from the CD-ROM. I have an inertia productions
disk of Classic Synth sounds but I still cannot get it
to load. When I attempt any disk functions besides
loading from the floppy drive it just reads : "Hard
Disk Not Ready" I don't know whether I still have the
IDs set wrong or SCSI card doesn't work but I have a
properly formatted CD to test it with now. I'd like
you to advise me before I open up the unit and start
messing with the SCSI card. I don't have any SCSI
terminators or an old Mac with a SCSI card to check
the CD-ROM. All things indicate that the CD-ROM is
functional. It powers up loads the CD and the light
goes green. The problem is getting the S1000 to
communicate with it. The guy I bought the S1000 from
insisted that it worked fine with CD-Rom loading thru
SCSI. If you could help me step by step that would be
great, I'm hating my S1000 right now.

Thanks,
Lyle
