s1000 Floppy issues

2009-02-14 by paypah

Hi all. I hope somebody can help me. I have an s1000kb (tank!!) v2
firmware that turns on ok and lights up. The existing floppy drive and
2 other floppies I have tried in it's place don't seem to want to
work. I Formatted a os 4.4 disk using windows 98 and all seemed to go
well but the s1000 doesn't want to recognise it. The usual "format not
recognised" and "trying a different density" and then the next stage
is when I try to format I get "disc is write protected" I am doing
this all under os 2 and 1.44 meg HD discs. Do I need to initially use
720 kb discs under v2 to upgrade os then load os in and try
formatting? I only ask as I haven't got a 720 kb disc and would go
hunting only if somebody thought it may solve the problem.
I have of course made sure the write protect on the disc is off!!!
Good to see there is a group of people out there using the s1000 and I
hope to join you soon
Cheers
Andy

Sounds like your Floppy drive is shot, I too have the KBS1000 but I converted the floppy drive to a ZIP 100 drive. I can set you up with the correct items to make the change, do you have SCSI? You will have to send your SCSI card to www.Route66studios.com for the SCSI card update, they alos have the KBS1000 4.40 ver eproms.

Hi there
Thanks for the info.
Am I right in thinking that AKAI floppy drives are specific hardware to the system then and that generic pc floppy drives will not work? That maybe why i'm having problems
As for the scsi card. No the s1000 I was given doesn't have a scsi drive or hdd so weighing up the costs it is perhaps not the best of ideas to be spending much money when I could perhaps purchase a s2000 with 8 outs and memory for less than £100

cheers anyway
I will have to do a bit of budgeting

Hi,

It is a specific model of floppy drive which was also used in pc's.
Look around message 632. There we discussed the floppy replacement.
You can probably find them on ebay. If you do a search on 'floppy' in
this forum - you will probably find other entries.

Frank

Well....I have to say that it's not just a simple PC drive and chances are that drive found on ebay will not work either....sorry but the Akai uses a vary special drive. There is also site with info that tells you how to do a replacement by changing some of the drives settings....this too is bogus and does not work.
