A rotary encoder would need extra hardware support, although I suppose
an intelligent device could imitate the pot - it would just need to be
told what its position was each time the data pot's function changed.
It might happen sometime, but not for the foreseeable future, so I'd
just go with the pot and stick a fancy knob on it if you like.
