alpha dial?

alpha dial?

2004-03-15 by ch.³l

hi Colin,
as i'm getting ready to start gathering parts for my second P3 i was
wondering about the possibility of an alpha dial in the place of the
data-pot, as has been discussed on this board before. you mentioned
something about it needing a change from an absolute to a relative
setting if i recall correctly. i'd really like an alpha dial if at
all possible, or does it require a huge change in the firmware?
if it's not reasonably possible i suppose i could just stick the top
of an alpha-dial on the pot to make it look like an alpha-dial..;)
o and i've ordered the book "Maximum MIDI: Music Applications in
C++", so i hope to be able to start on an editor in the reasonably
close future. :)

A rotary encoder would need extra hardware support, although I suppose
an intelligent device could imitate the pot - it would just need to be
told what its position was each time the data pot's function changed.
It might happen sometime, but not for the foreseeable future, so I'd
just go with the pot and stick a fancy knob on it if you like.

Hmmm... ;-)

:D guess that's what i'll be doing then..

...do i detect a note of sarcasm here? i'm a quick learner and i'm
pretty good at the trial-and-error thing...especially the latter
part ;)

Not at all. "I hope to be able to start on a ... in the reasonably close
future" just had a familiar ring to it...
If you've got the free time to do it, that'll be excellent.

Looked at this, its SOOOO heavily biased towards windows, a shame as
potentially it could have a lot of uses for generic C++ MIDI apps, including
the Chameleon.

luckily i was planning to do a windows app. ;) but it looks like a
good starting point for a C++ novice, aimed in the right direction.
the whole C++ thing is quite interesting, but i pretty much see it as
another tool i'd like to use to get me where i'm going (not quite
sure where that is yet though).. if i find it and it's possibilities
interesting enough i might look deeper, but for now biased towards
windows does me fine...
