>>Potentially you could set up the front panel as a proper control surface which would work independently of sequence playback. The problem with that is a lack of both code-space and RAM to hold much more than one configuration of the 32 knobs.<< perhaps a more serious problem is that we are talking about 32 knobs, & not 32 rotary encoders... we've had this discussion before; the p3 should be enjoyed as a sequencer. there are plenty of midi controllers out there, many of them better suited to the task. those nice chaps at kenton have a new product.. I saw it at a trade show a few months ago & was dismayed to note that it was usb-only. so I have pestered them into making a midi version of it. it has a joystick, nine buttons & nine encoders, each with a ring of LEDs. for each of the nine channels it can transmit on, it remembers where the encoders were "pointing" when you last used it on that channel. I think there's a behringer box that does something similar, but this kenton (the "mini AB" it's called) is tiny. I've tried using my p3 as a midi mixer... too confusing. all it takes is for something else (front panel, sequencer, volume pedal, another control surface) to alter the same mix parameter... chaos. duncan.
