Transmitting Aux events when not running?

Transmitting Aux events when not running?

2006-06-17 by James R. Coplin

Just got my P3 yesterday, wow! In general I have to say that the
learning curve isn't nearly as step as what I expected from some
threads and I really love it overall.

However, is there a way to send the aux event when the knob is moved
but not running? I work with a bunch of plugins and they have a learn
mode but not a way to manually assign a cc. So, currently if I have
an aux event set as CC#100, I have to set up my other midi controller
to transmit cc#100, have the plugin learn that and then drive it with
the p3. Major pain. Any thoughts or workarounds?

There's no way to do this as it stands.
The events that send a CC from the knob are handled by the sequence engine,
so if it's not running, they don't happen.
I have considered making the knobs in play mode programmable.
They can be enabled for sending 'mixer' messages (volume and pan
controllers) already.
Potentially you could set up the front panel as a proper control surface
which would work independently of sequence playback.
The problem with that is a lack of both code-space and RAM to hold much more
than one configuration of the 32 knobs.
You'd probably want at least one knob setup per bank.

perhaps a more serious problem is that we are talking about 32 knobs,
& not 32 rotary encoders... we've had this discussion before; the p3
should be enjoyed as a sequencer. there are plenty of midi controllers
out there, many of them better suited to the task.
those nice chaps at kenton have a new product.. I saw it at a trade
show a few months ago & was dismayed to note that it was usb-only. so
I have pestered them into making a midi version of it. it has a
joystick, nine buttons & nine encoders, each with a ring of LEDs. for
each of the nine channels it can transmit on, it remembers where the
encoders were "pointing" when you last used it on that channel. I
think there's a behringer box that does something similar, but this
kenton (the "mini AB" it's called) is tiny.
I've tried using my p3 as a midi mixer... too confusing. all it takes
is for something else (front panel, sequencer, volume pedal, another
control surface) to alter the same mix parameter... chaos.

duncan.

I think you missed my point. I have tons of midi control surfaces,
it is just that most plugins use a "learn" feature to set up
automation. Since the P3 doesn't have a means to send a controller
and the plugin won't generally let me assign it directly, I have to
use a MIDI control surface just to hook up the automation to be
driven by the P3. I just wanted someway to send the controller long
enough for the learn functions of plugins to cathc it and hook it
up. Something as simple as pressing a button to just send the
current value and controller message for a moment would even
suffice. I'm not looking for realtime control, just the ability to
broadcast the controller so that plugins can be used more
efficiently.

Colin, would something like this be possible? A button press that
would just send a MIDI message of the currently selected aux event
and value for a moment? This would solve this problem I think.

you're right, I did. my bad, as they say over there.

Would be possible, but... which button ?

Chef's choice? ;)

I don't see it as a live performance thing so a combination keypress would
be fine if there is one available.

Midi Slave

2006-07-03 by Larry Pham

Hi Colin,

The P3 arrived on Friday and I just came back from holidays to find it
waiting for me. The new silver color is quite sexy and the black and grey
knobs are very nice as well.

I've managed to get every thing working but I can't find where to set the
clock so I can slave it to Cubase. Will it start/stop once synched to Cubase
or can I trigger it by midi?

Cheers,

Larry
