That board is the PLED adaptor board. The original board won't drive the
backlight on an LCD module without adding some extra fly-wires for pins 15
and 16.
But you don't really need that board - the ribbon cable can be soldered
directly to the LCD module, paying attention to the fact that pins 15 and 16
are usually found next to pin 1 on an LCD module (i.e. 15, 16, 1, 2, ... 14)
It's just quicker and more elegant to use the adaptor board.
I don't normally have any spare adaptor boards, as I buy them in equal
quantities with the LCD modules, and assemble them in advance.
