The final price still depends largely on one cost I don't have - that of the production enclosure, which is the single largest expense on the bill of materials by a long way. I'm presently waiting on people coming back to me with quotes. The sticker price will be based directly on the cost price. Building a piece of electronic equipment in low volume, to a high quality level, with most of the work done in a country with a minimum wage is always going to be expensive by comparison to mass-market consumer electronic devices churned out of a factory in China where the workers have low pay and no rights. If I used cheaper tact switches, encoders and knobs, I could probably shave a bit off the price too. But the aim here is to produce something that feels solid and durable, not cheap and disposable. > I think Colin has already commented that because of the > increased complexity (& smaller footprint?) a DIY kit is not > practical. True enough. P3 was all thru-hole, and easily hand-solderable. Cirklon uses various 0.5mm pitch ICs that take skill and practice to solder reliably. Issues of build-ability aside, there is a huge amount of development effort in a device like Cirklon. If I sell a low-price kit, there is very little return on that investment. Kudos won't pay the mortgage. Best regards, Colin Fraser Sequentix Music Systems Ltd http://www.sequentix.com
