It seems to happen very occasionally - not often enough to come to any
conclusions about possible causes.
The rate it happens at doesn't seem to have increased even though the CPUs
are all 5 years old at least.
One of these days, I'll investigate other CPU types as spares for P3.
The original CPU seems impossible to find in DIP, but it is available is
SMD.
There are other makers parts that might do the job too.
It would be nice to have a bit of backup - I only have a handful of used
spare CPUs.
