PCB layouts 'complete'

2003-04-07 by colinfraser_com

Hi Folks,

I finally got the double-sided PCB layouts for the sequencer
finished.
Fingers crossed that they are all correct !

I'll be ordering a one-off set of test boards this week, which
should take a couple of weeks to arrive.
When I've got them built and working, I'll be taking orders for sets
of boards and PCBs. Not long now !

Cheers,
Colin f

They can be made to look pretty without a soldering iron, as long as
you don't mind a slight loss of functionality - i.e. no input,
display or output.
Seriously though, the assembly is pretty straight forward - much less
complicated than analogue synth circuitry where you have lots of
different values of components.
I estimate it would take me less than 2 hours to populate a set of
boards.
I've been thinking about doing one with a clear case to show what's
inside, and save me drilling holes for LEDs and LCD ;-)
That should be v. prettty.

Once I've generated some capital from the initial run of boards, I'll
be able to buy enough component stock to sell complete kits,
populated board sets and ultimately complete units. If people are
prepared to pay a deposit that's enough to cover the cost of
components, then I'll be able to do that sooner.

Soldering is fun. Maybe it's time to learn ?

Cheers,
Colin f

Can these be arranged in some way to look pretty? Or is a soldering
iron going to be involved at some point 8-( ?

Colin,

I'm up for a set of boards, just let me know when and how much to send
you.
Most of the parts I may well already have, but could you publish a parts
list so I can start shopping now? I guess I'll probably buy the CPU from
you as that will be the only hard part to find as a single unit (rather
than having to buy 50 or 100).

  Paul
P.s. PaulN, Im sure Colin/Tony/Me would solder the boards for you.

The PCB suppliers one-off cost is discounted by 20% for subsequent
orders of the same board, so if I only order *one* more board set
after the test board, I will charge 85 ukp ($135) for the board + CPU.
(I fitted the whole set of boards for the sequencer onto one quad
Eurocard size panel, which I will shear into the smaller boards).
For an order of more than one board, I will need to get a quote from
them. I will have no idea how much the price will come down by until
I get the quote, but you can safely assume it will be less than 85
ukp for boards + CPU.
The cost of the remaining components will be around 100 ukp,
excluding a case. I will post a final Schaeffer front panel file,
which will cost about 50 ukp, but the cheaper option will be to make
your own case. If you stick the whole thing in a biscuit tin, you
could probably build one for less than 200 ukp.

I may also decide to supply parts such as the keyswitches myself,
since they wil be cheaper in bulk, and I can pass on that saving.

Note that this pricing is still estimated, and the markup on initial
boards will be very low on the basis that early users will be beta
testing the software to a certain extent.

Cheers,
Colin f

any idea yet what the costs might be on our end for the
various options (PCB, Full Kit, Assembled Units, etc.)?
i know i wouldn't have it together yet, but you really seem
to have this whole thing rolling now, so i thought i'd
ask...

take care

p.s. you're right...soldering *is* fun!
