Synthesizers.com Q119 Sequencer

Opps!!! I guess that I stumbled across the wrong sequencer site!!!

Does anyone on this site have a Q119 or has had one?

Hi,

Does anyone care to describe the pros and cons of the Q119 and the P3?

I'm a newbie...so please keep it simple :-)

Harry

Im just off to bed, so im going to be brief -

The list is not endless, but certainly large. Ive jsut had a look at the
q119 page, and it looks like a fairly standard analogue sequencer. Havent
read the text, but looking at the picture. Other companies make similar,
ie. doepfers a155.

The p3 is a sequencer. The q119 is a sequencer. Both have dials. That
seems to be about where the similarities end.

The p3 is midi, the q119 analogue. P3 has memories, p3 allows all sorts of
crazy sequencer modes that the a119 dosnt. P3 has variable gate lengths for
each note. P3 is quantised to midi notes. P3 would need a midi>>cv
interface to use with your dotcom system. An oakley/maddox polydac would go
nicely with your dotcom...

Anywat, theres not really that much point in me just listing all the
differances, ill be here forever.

I have a modular. Ive built a p3. It will offer ^so^ much more depth then
an analogue sequencer. Theyre just not really comparable IMHO. There are
pros to the Q119. There must be. Not having used one, i dont know them.

Im off to bed.

Cya later,

Julian

IMO the pros with a 'real' analogue sequencer compared to P3 would be
the CV/gate outputs and the ability to clock the sequencer at audio
rates to use as an alternative waveform generator.
It really depends what your main purpose for a sequencer is whether you
should choose something like the synth.com module or P3.
If your use for a sequencer is to form part of a single patch on your
modular synth, providing a sort of complex LFO modulation with discrete
steps of different values, then you want a real analogue sequencer.
Sure you can use a real analogue sequencer for coming up with
interesting note patterns too - but inevitably this means coming up with
great patterns that you will never find again because it's so hard to
record accurate positions for all the knobs on paper. And you can only
switch gradually from one pattern to another by adjusting each step as
the sequencer plays. Gradually evolving patterns are great, but not if
that's all you can do.
If you want to sequence patterns of notes and controllers, especially
across more than one instrument, I think you'll find a real analogue
sequencer rather limited and frustrating.

As an addendum, I sold one of my ARP sequencers having found that the
only sequencer I really touch now is the P3. I have also sold my
Regelwerk too and have not turned on the Polymorph in months.
I still have several analogue sequencers - a custom ARP and the
Minisequencer of the Oberheim 2-Voice - but the P3 is sequencer king
here and I even find myself driving the modular synth from it (via a
MIDI/CV interface) rather than the ARP!

Dunno if that helps because sometimes having those voltage and gate
outputs direct to hand does still make an analogue sequencer quicker
to use.
