Just invented this myself 4 seconds ago :-))) Thanks!

One more time:
SAVING a pattern to, let's say, pattern 5 is editing in editmode, then
press save, then press step 5 and voila, pattern 5 is in place.

EDITING an existing pattern 5 you HAVE to enter edit playlist, and
*then* press step 5?
WOW... THAT needs a change if possible Colin :-) Isn't it possible to
create a keys-combination plus pressing the wanted pattern number
(stepkeys) for this? Oh no, because you have not determined on what
track you are then yet... You do that with entering playlist I guess...

I get the hang of it Paul, thanks! Confusing indeed though. The manual
needs to be extended for this particular part I think...

If the pattern 5 plays at some point in the playlist, you can just press
PLAY/EDIT and the track key from play mode while pattern 5 is playing.
You need to go into playlist edit to select the pattern for editing if
it is not the current pattern playing on the track.
Remember that if you set up a playlist of multiple patterns, then use
real-time record in play mode, you can record on all the patterns as the
play, and therefore create multiple patterns in one pass.

The key combination is FUNC+track to select the track number, then
PLAY/EDIT plus pattern number to select the pattern number.
Of course, this takes you from play mode to pattern edit via playlist
edit. but if you shut your eyes, you wont notice ;-)
A long time ago, P3 had no playlists, and the currently selected pattern
on each track was selected by pressing FUNC+track, then pressing the
step key for the pattern to select. You can still get this behaviour be
enabling the 'quick pattern select' user config option.
I agree it would be nice if there were a way to select each pattern for
editing directly, but as there can be 128 different patterns in a bank,
and only 16 step keys, there has to be a multi-step process for
selection.

It's always a compromise between simplicity and functionality. I think
once you grasp the principle, you'll find it makes sense.
I've thought about how to change it, but there isn't really any simpler
way to do it without adding lots more buttons.

One of these days...

Yes, I noticed that! And THAT is a cool feature!

Yes, I played this afternoon with the P3 in that area extensively and
as a matter of fact, I was pretty soon convinced that it works like a
charm this way :-)

Yep. See above. And please do not take my posts as critic. Your P3 is
awsome! And your commitment to help the users even more awsome!

Ah... cool! :-)))) (Nice Pink Floyd tune as well, btw).
