Key samples arrived...

So, do these look worth twice the price of the Maplin keys with
paper labels ?
They've used a slightly different font to the one I asked for (which
I'll take up with them...) but they look pretty nice to me.

not for me thanks...i don't like the color or the shape. they look
way too much like regular pc-keyboard keys to me.

They look fine to me. But then I like anything that encourages a good
banging...

They are regular PC keys... Just about the same as on a TR909.
Colour-wise, they are closer to the Maplin keys in real life that they are
in the photo.
I guess you can't please everyone though ;-)
Maybe I'll leave the holes in the boards for the Maplin keys, in case anyone
else prefers the original industrial look.

Oddly, these keycaps fit perfectly onto the Maplin keys, but the Maplin caps
don't fit on the Cherry keys.
The Cherry switching mechanism is nicer though.
They make you want to bang all night.

Colin, are Cherry switches available in a variant that can
be mounted on my own panel instead of the pcboard? I mean
like a jack, in a round hole? I'm quite convinced now that
I want these, instead of the buttons I was originally going
for.

I don't care for the color or the shape either.

I could live with the shape but IBM clone beige never looks good with
anything. Are black keys with white text an option perhaps?

Change of plan

2004-10-28 by colinfraser_com

New key samples arrived today.
I much prefer the colour and shape of these myself, so thanks to the
grumbling beige haters.
They are a very light grey, with a squarer, flatter top and corners.

These will be the standard production P3 key.
Multimec tacts will remain an option.
The key labels will be as shown in this pdf:
http://www.colinfraser.com/p3/pdf/p3-prod-labels.pdf

Potentially, the production cases may have individual apertures for
the top of each key, like on Gert's Big One - I'll see how much that
will add to the cost.

I don't know if anyone ever put a P3 together with the non-Multimec
tact switches (?).

that might be nice... trying to align those switches is a bitch.

i tried, and it didn't work out too well, but that's because the switch
caps were too big for the case holes.

bleep.

There's a trick to aligning the keyswitches I found relatively recently...
0.6" DIP IC packing tube has a groove on the back that the switch caps fit
into nicely.
I place all the switches into the board, then clip on a length of IC tube
along to top of all the keys.
Holding it together, I turn over the board and hold it down onto the tube.
The groove in the tube keeps all the switches in line while you solder.
I hope this trick works with the Cherry switches, although I will try to get
the holes in the PCB a tighter tolerance so they have less room to move out
of line.
