Odd. Haven't seen that sort of behaviour before.
You could try adjusting the brightness control to see if it can even things
out.

You can get a suitable adapter in Maplin, but I've had some quality issues
with the connectors on those. Rapid Electronics do a better, cheaper
adapter, but they would charge you postage on an order less than 30 quid
IIRC. Any 9v DC or AC adapter with at least 400mA rating and a 2.5mm barrel
connector should do - you may find suitable universal adapters in
supermarkets and DIY shops.

Yes, it also applies to play mode record - you'll find the option on the
second page there too.
