One of the main reasons I chose the P3 CPU was because there are equivalent
parts from a number of makers. The 8051 is a very well established standard.
The new part is a re-vamp of the old one - seems to be based on the same
die, with a process shrink.

The CPU core is essentially identical. There are some extra peripherals, but
nothing I would use in P3.
The one improvement I will take advantage of is the increased maximum clock
speed.
The previous CPU had a limit of 20MHz, though P3 runs at 18MHz in order to
get the right baud rate for Midi. The 18MHz crystals are not as common as
other values.
The new CPU will run at up to 30MHz, which means I can use a 24MHz crystal.
That's a 33% speed increase, which will translate to reduced latency if you
make heavy use of events.
I just need to work out how to get the firmware to detect which processor
type it's using, and configure the timers to compensate.
The one possible problem is that the maximum timer period with the faster
clock may mean an increase in minimum tempo is required - we'll see.

I'll get there eventually ;-)

Little tip for "mute track"

2005-02-27 by Paul Nagle

This is probably an obvious one but sometimes you don't always think
of those.

I wanted to set up two alternate basslines in one of my banks but in
the heat of the concert I can't always remember which track is doing
what function. Therefore I wanted to prevent the two tracks playing at
the same time cos it is a bassline after all. All I did was add a Mute
Track event in the first step using one of the auxes, each one
referring to the other track. Now whenever I select one of the track
pairs, it mutes the other without me having to remember it.

Useful eh? If there were a "Mute if Gate on trk n" event you could
duck tracks according to other instruments - like closed and open high
hats maybe... 8)
