No PLED trouble anymore

No PLED trouble anymore

2003-10-17 by roelp23

Hi,
Think I solved the problem. And again I did something pretty stupid.
For lines 15 and 16 are not used using the PLED they were hanging
lose in my enclosure and I didn't like that, maybe it would make some
shortcut somwere. So I putted some shrink cable around those lose
ends. And ironically, doing this I melted the two cables together. No
bigger shortcut thinkable! I repaired it and now the machine is
already running for a few minutes without R19 becoming hot. Now I go
back to my even lovlier machine!!
Cheers,
Roel

Pin 15 and 16 are the backlight supply for the LCD module.
With them shorted together thru 10R, you'd have been sinking 500mA, or
2.5 watts.
The resistor's only rated for half a watt or so, so it's not surprising
it burnt !
I cut off the wires for pins 15 and 16 on the cable to my module, and
made sure they weren't touching.
I'll add a note to the construction page to make this clear.
At least it was within the limits of the voltage regulator, so there
shouldn't be any permanent damage !

New beta

2003-10-20 by Paul Nagle

Colin, I really like the things you added (or subtly moved around)
this time. The new directions are spot on - all of them, now I've
twigged the differences. Tried lots of messing with last step, skip
and changing directions during playback and seems pretty darn solid.

Good stuff man, very good. The UI really is far better than it has a
right to be. Does that make sense?

It makes sense if you mean it's less trouble than the usual 16x2 LCD +
buttons interface.
I think it helps a lot that the 'basic' functionality doesn't rely on
the LCD too much.
Originally there weren't supposed to be quite so many softkeys, but it
seemed quite painless to add them, so I guess we can keep thinking up
new things until there gets to be too many pages. To be honest, there
aren't too many more things I want to add. Certainly no more softkeys
that I see a need for aside from 'bank init' in play mode. The access to
'mutes' in playlist edit, and 'playlist holds' in play mode will
probably use the step key function select, since it isn't doing anything
in those modes yet (except the VU/position toggle, but that cna move to
knob function). That's so long as it doesn't get confusing for it to
have so many different functions...
