P3 and Macbeth M3X

P3 and Macbeth M3X

2006-08-07 by Olivier Tison

Just a quick one.

I want to sequence my Macbeth M3X (analogue mini "clone" from Ken Macbeth)
with the P3 so that it glides like a 303 when I tie steps with the P3, but
is does NOT glide when notes are not legato/tied.

the M3X has a legato function on the envelopes, so when tieing steps
together it will NOT retrigger the envelope, which is what I want really,
however, for portamento, the M3X needs a controller number (say #65) to tell
him to turn the portamento on or off. The actual controller # can be set up
to what I want (the M3X has an integrated kenton pro-one MIDI to CV
interface)...
So far I've been recreating the tie-gliding character of the 303 by setting
up an aux controller number and basically replicating by hand what happens
on the Tie line onto the Aux line. but it's a bit of a pain and a much
simpler way could be to tell the P3 to send such MIDI controller accordingly
to what happens in the Tie event sequence.

so here's the question : does the P3 send MIDI event of any kind for steps
that have their tie status activated ?
if not, which is what I believe (after all, from a MIDI perspective a Tie is
just a note off message carried one step further), then can I set the P3 in
such a manner (say using an Aux events that would get the Tie status of the
step and act on my controller number 65 ?)

I had a quick look at the reference manual yesterday and from what I can
read , there is no way to do that at the moment...

I was thinking maybe Colin could give us some thoughts as to how this is
possible ?

The Pro Solo MkI appears not to have an auto- or legato-glide mode, which is
what you need to use tie for activating slide.
This is a common feature on better MIDI to CV convertors, and was indeed
added to the Pro Solo MkII.

There's no way to do this automatically at the moment.
It's the sort of thing I could add as a user config option.
I'll put it on the list for the next time I have a look at the P3 OS.

that'd be great Colin ! I see some sort of User Config for choosing to
have a special behaviour for CC65 in Aux events,
such that it would automatically be 127 if Tie is on, 0 if Tie is off.
something like that.

beside benefiting the M3X or Kenton Pro Solo mkI owners I believe
loads of other synth users would benefit from this. My Alesis Ion has
this legato setting for portamento for those 303-like sequencing
moments, but I take it that this is not as common a feature on other
synths ?

thanks anyway for the quick answer !
