I remeber hearing talk about a backlit display for the P3 and i think
it is mentioned in the build docs as there is an extra reistor to add,
ive tried hunting the messages for backlit but didnt come up with
much...anyone here get one and could you possibly point me in the
right direction?

The standard P3 display is a PLED module, where the matrix emits light
itself, so there's no need for a backlight.
The interface for the PLED display is essentially the same as the de facto
standard Hitachi LCD controller interface.
You'll find many different modules from different makers which will use this
same protocol.

One difference I've found across different modules is the connections used
for the backlight.
On the PLED modules I use, the connections are numbered 15, 16, 1, 2, 3, ...
14
Pins 1 to 14 are the standard logic connections for data transfer, pins 15
and 16 are for the backlight.
I've seen LCD modules with this same pin layout, and also some with 1, 2, 3,
... 14, 15, 16 instead - check before you wite it up incorrectly.
Note also that pins 15 and 16 are not wired on the PLED adaptor board
supplied with a P3 kit, so you either need to wire your ribbon cable to your
display module directly, or use a couple of jumper wires from the adaptor
board to the right pins on the LCD module.
You also need to fit an appropriate value for R19.
This can vary depending on the forward voltage of the backlight in the
module you are using.
This should be an LED type backlight by the way - some older displays used
EL backlights, which require a totally different supply.

Hi Colin

thanks for the info ;) I got the following HD44780 based backlit
display from futurlec a while back
http://www.futurlec.com.au/LED/LCD16X2BL.jsp
I've conpared the spec sheets and the pinouts are the same as are
the voltage requirements (if anything this model looks a bit more
tolerant)
The DDRAM addressing looks completely differnt to me but i was
hoping someone could take a look at the link above and tell me if
theres anyway i can use it before i go and buy from crystalfonts and
pay more for shipping then for the module!

thanks
Brett

Hi colin

Ignore the futurlec info...i think its the wrong display anyway. I
hunted and hunted and have found this
http://www.onestopdisplays.net/OSD1602.php here in melbourne which
is the same as the crystalfonts unit in every way i can see....and
at $25au its even cheaper than crystalfonts ;)

Cant wait looks like my P3 will be up and running this weekend!!!

The DDRAM addressing information was wrong on that page - the top bit is
used to indicate that the instruction being written is setting the DDRAM
address, so the actual addresses should really be 00 to 0F and 40 to 4F.
But...

that looks ideal, yes. And no messy jumper wires for backlighting.
