memory boards and hammond cases

2007-09-24 by Julian

I have one of the pre-production p3s that steve thomas engraved and routed
the cases for.

Ive just opened it up to fit the memory expansion board, and, whaddya know -
what should be a nice simple task gets more complex... : (
There is a lack of clearance between the note board and the memory board.
Specifically where the ribbon cable attatches to the pot board theres a
conflict. The upper pot board's connector seems, from what i can tell by
peering in through the gap when i close the case, to clear. This must, of
course, be due to the angle of the case...

Anyway..

I was considering desoldering the pcb headder and swapping it over to the
other side (which may, or may not, just give that little extra clearance)
but i cant quite get my head arround the ribbon cable - if i split the cable
connector and rotate the cable, are the correct cores going to align with
the correct pins?

Alternativly, which would quite possibly actually be easier, i may just
solder the ribbon direct to the pcb.

There must still be some people on the list from back in the day - just
wondered if anyone has encountered (and more to the point, resolved) this
issue?

Cheers, Julian

I've seen that problem in a Hammond case too - the narrower, squarer one.
I replaced the right-angled ribbon cable connector with a straight one on
the lower pot board.
The cable may need rejigged to be a little longer between the two pot
boards, since this puts the lower connector further round.

Hi Julian,

I don't know if it helps, but I installed a memx board in my Hammond
case, although I found I had to rotate the main board through 180 deg
and extend the power supply cables to get the lid to fit. Only a 20
min job though, and it all went back together again.

Cheers

Andy

Right,

Swapped the right angle headder to a normal one, and evreything seems as if
itll fit, however...

Ive managed to bu*#er up the rest of it!

Now, when i switch on, the 8 mode leds light momentarily, and then go out.
No other led does anything, except, on one occasion, all 16 step leds glowed
orange momentarily and then went out.

Booting with f1 and '1' does nothing different (ie exactly the same effect).

I have tried swapping back to the original memory chip, but, again, exactly
the same effect.

Well, ive made a mess of it, havent i... Any suggestions?

Thanks, Julian

That sounds like flash amnesia.
You have the older type CPU, which was more prone to that.
If you send it to me, I'll test/reflash it.
