re: LED polarity

re: LED polarity

2008-06-09 by THX1742

Finally started making my P3 (hooray), all's going good so far and although I'm a relative
novice to electronics construction most of the solder joints are looking clean. However, I was
wondering about the orientation of the LED's in the function switch board. I know that the
shorter leg of the LED is negative and notice that on the board each LED position has one
hole "square" (by this I mean that where the metal plate shows through the green of the
board it's etched out a square) and one hole "circle", question is which one's positive, which
one negative? Also is this a standard way of marking the polarity on boards? Many thanks in
advance, and apologies for lack of correct terminology,

In fairness I imagine this may well be just the start of threads by me about stuff like this as
construction goes on!

hi,i am buiding a p3 too!!

read this:in the section diy P3 web site version 4

The process I use for fitting the LEDs to the correct height is the
same as for the Function switch board. I put the LEDs loosely into
their holes, making sure to observe the correct orientation, then fit
the board to the panel, and feed the LEDs into the panel holes so they
are all at an even height.
N.B.These Tri-colour LEDs have 2 anodes and a common cathode. The
anode for the RED LED has a right-angle at the top of the component
leg. The GREEN LED has a 45 degree angle at the top of the leg. The
RED anode should go toward to top of the board, and the GREEN anode in
the hole with the square around it on the component overlay.
Here's the board with the LEDs just sitting in place - not soldered !

good luck Boops

Thanks for that,

for some reason that I can't quite fathom I can't actually find that bit of text on the site,
on the http://www.sequentix.com/build/cnst-switches.htm Colin does speak about the
LED's but not as you've quoted. Anyway I was being unclear as I'm actually still on the
regular LED with just the 2 legs, square pad -, circle pad + ?

Thanks again,

Peter.

The square pads are the anode, the circles are the cathode.
