Cirk CV's

2010-09-08 by Steve Maietta

Continuing my duties as Muffwiggler forum -> this group idea-portal, here are a few recent posts from the analog fanatics over there..
""""I'd really like the Cirklon to be able to cycle through the voices with each note. Each note sends over a different CV pin, with the reset programable in the sequencer.
I love the mono/poly and perfourmer for this feature. I think the MOTM 650 does it also.

Also, and far OT, it would be really nice to send notes to the Cirklon via usb from my C-thru axis 49. This is currently a usb slave only device requiring a computer. I use a computer a work, when I'm working, and I don't like to look at one when I get home and make music.""""
Then I posted to the forum Colin's reply about how involved it would be to make all 24 pins user assignable. The post got this response, which I agree with.

""""In light of the last post, I think I'm gonna change my vote from "user assignable" to "whatever the hell Colin thinks is sensible." It occurred to me a couple of nights ago what a total pain in the ass adding assignability to the I/O scheme would be, both in hardware and in software.
Gracefully re-routing tracks to reflect changes in the I/O scheme seems like it'd be a pretty tough - if not downright impossible - nut to crack. I imagine all kinds of hell would break loose if the user changed I/O assignments that individual sequencer tracks relied on.. Who wants to spend their time fixing broken track assignments? Not I.

One thing I would like to see for sure though is at least a few bipolar inputs and outputs for modulation sources.""""

...which amounts, in essence, to having a number of CV/gate outs configured
as a polyphonic group with a voice allocation algorithm.
That's something I already have a library of code for from another project.

The master/slave issue for USB MIDI is a bit of a problem.
There has to be a master device to enumerate the slave devices, and route
MIDI streams between them.
It would be great if there were some kind of smart USB MIDI hub with a few
USB host ports, to which you could attach a number of slave devices.
It'd be difficult to build a unit to do this for less than the cost of an
EePC, unless it was something you connected to a PC to configure which would
then just plug-and-play with the configured devices for later use
stand-alone.
A simple device would only be able to work with class-compliant devices too
- otherwise you'd need enough OS to support proprietary drivers.
