Cirklon latest?

Cirklon latest?

2010-12-05 by Ditton33

Hi. I know Colin is busy constructing/beta testing etc but it might be worth
updating the web site (and this list;) with a brief summary of the latest
state of play.

Esp the "factory units will ship in September" bit, even though they
probably did, to beta testers. :)

Cheers.

I'd love to know how many units are shipping per month and how many people are on the wait list to buy a Cirklon. ;-)

Yeah, that's a good point.

Not very many, so far.
Apart from the delay while I got the CV output board finished, I've had
trouble sourcing the encoder knobs.
A small number of units have shipped to beta testers, with their CV boards
to follow.
The CV driver PCBs were due to arrive today, though I've not seen a delivery
van for over a week due to the snow.
With the CV driver board successfully tested, I will finally be in a
position to order populated boards elsewhere.
That will increase the rate of production hugely. Hand-soldering SMT is fine
for prototyping, but will soon drive you blind and insane.

I haven't counted for a while, but it's a lot more than I had anticipated by
this point.

Over the last week, I've arranged a camera setup to let me make
tutorial/demo videos for Cirklon, with a clear view of the UI and close-up
of the display.
The first fruits of that should be public later this week.

Thanks for your efforts in doing these videos. Looking forward to seeing them.

one quick question. will we be able to use the cirklon as a midi to cv
converter? im already sold but if i can do that it will definitely save me a
lot of money and space.

Colin, are we talking hundreds or thousands on the wait list? An estimate would be great to be able to update my expectation which since September has been "I'll have my Cirklon for Christmas!"

The waiting list is long enough that some will probably have to wait for the
next production batch.
The slower than expected rate of production has been down to two main things
- the feature-creeping CV interface board, and back-ordered encoder knobs.
The units that have shipped so far went out minus CV boards.
I received the first batch of CV interface PCBs this week, and I'm
assembling and those testing now.
The back-ordered knobs are out of my control.
I thought I had all required stock of the parts that might cause me trouble
(key-caps and switches, CPUs, etc.) when the enclosures were ready, but I
had assumed that the 16mm soft-touch knobs without indicator lines were
commonly available.
It was only when my usual source ran out, I discovered no-one else carries
them, or an alternative that would fit the same aperture and panel height.
I've had samples direct from the factory to try getting a better lead-time
than waiting for Farnell, but the samples had slightly larger shaft spacing,
and wont grip the encoders.
So in the meantime, I'm hand-building units until I use up the limited stock
of knobs I did manage to get.
Once I have stock of all the parts to finish the first batch, I can order
the populated boards for the rest of them - around 40 units.
In theory, they could be ready by Christmas if the knobs arrive in stock
tomorrow.
In practice, we'll have to wait and see.

The CV bus appears as if it were another MIDI in/out port with a CV
convertor attached.
The obvious difference being the communication speed is much higher, so
there is no audible latency.

It would be rather a waste to do so, and I shouldn't really allow it on
principle, but the soft-thru routing would allow you to forward the messages
from a MIDI input to the CV output port, so it could act as a MIDI to CV
convertor.
If you've got a spare 303 lying around, I do the MIDIBass interface for
those that allow you to use them as a CV convertor too ;-)
