Re: RS-200 vs. A-155/154

2008-07-16 by stuadh

Hi,

there are three primary choices of true analogue sequencer in the
Eurorack format, although several more possibilities (look here for a
starter http://www.schneidersladen.de/english.html and look under step
sequencers)

I have the A-155, and although it is a useabe sequencer, I feel
somewhat limited by only having 2 x 8 steps. My own opinion is that
the RS200 is a better module, having for a start 3 x 8 steps although
its overall functionality is very similar.

The third option, although it is more expensive is the Analogue
Solutions Oberkorn (http://www.analoguesolutions.com/ look under Oberkorn)

The Oberkorn is 3 x 16 steps, giving three times the pattern
capability of the A-155 with greater functionality, including my
favourite, reset to step 16. This allows you to reset the sequence so
that it starts at step 1, not step 2. Of course, with this, the price
is starting to rise. If I had the money, I would commission a custom
8 x 16 step sequencer with a half dozen gate/trigger outs. Failing
that, I'd probably buy three Oberkorns!

In addition to a sequencer, you'll need a clock source (the Oberkorn
has one built in) such as a midi-CV converter, clock or LFO source.

A sequential Switch such as the A-151 or RS150 for chaining the
different rows of steps together. I have altered my A151 to switch
between 2, 3 or 4 rows.

If you want to use your sequencer to generate musical sequences (i.e.
control the pitch of your VCOs) you'll probably need at least one
quantiser such as the RS260 or A156. I have the A156 which is
perfectly serviceable.

Other options include Midi sequencers such as the MAQ 16/3 from
Doepfer, the Sequentix P3 (http://www.sequentix.com/) or the zeit rack
(http://www.infectionmusic.com/sequencers/zeitrack.html).

There is also the DIY option (I tried it but have been unsuccessful,
so far. I need to do some more troubleshooting) such as the CGS 59
Programmer (http://www.cgs.synth.net/) or the Milton
(http://www.buzzclick-music.com/about_milton.html).

There are also a number of "soft Sequencers such as the one in Reason,
or Numerology. I tried the latter but I didn't really like it. When
it comes down to it, I want to see lots of knobs and flashing LEDs.

Hope this helps,

Stuadh
